TV Fanatic Round Table: Best New Show of 2013

From drama to comedy, network television to Netflix, the small screen offered up a number of enjoyable new offerings in 2013.

What was the best new show of the year? That's the question our TV Fanatic staff tackles in our latest year-end Round Table.

Gabrielle Moss: Trophy Wife, Trophy Wife, Trophy Wife!

Miranda Wicker: The Originals! Best, best, best! Give me more Elijah and Klaus and Rebekah! And Marcel! I have been a very good girl this year, Santa!

Michelle Carlbert: Sleepy Hollow! I was sucked into that show from the first minute of the pilot and was a fan by the time the title card appeared. It's a show that, on paper, shouldn't work and yet somehow it does. Plus, Tom Mison...  just sayin.

Christina Tran: Devious Maids! Summer Sunday nights just wouldn’t be the same without it.

Lisa Palmer: The Americans. Hands down. Great writing, stellar acting, strong direction. And who can forget how well Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" was used in the premiere?

Christine Orlando: Mistresses on ABC. Alyssa Milano and all of the ladies are gorgeous. The men are handsome. The stories were great fun and it had a lot more heart than I expected. It even had me talking out loud to the characters and throwing things at my TV on a regular basis. What more can you ask for?

Dan Forcella: Orphan Black was my favorite new show of the year. On a little known network it did big things thanks to its exciting action sequences, its growing mystery and the break out performance of Tatiana Maslany.

Kate Brooks: Agents of SHIELD. I was weary at the beginning, but as it has gone on I'm really into the characters. I want more!!

Leigh Raines: The Originals! So obsessed. I look forward to it more than The Vampire Diaries at this point. And Elijah got 50 times sexier somehow, go figure.

Carissa Pavlica: It's a toss up between two very different entries that nobody else will pick. The Fall that aired on Netflix was was a top notch mystery thriller with brilliant acting that took a lot of risks and The Returned on Sundance proved there is still a lot to be done with the zombie genre, so much so that A&E is remaking a U.S. version of the French drama.

Doug Wolfe: I'm with Kate. After watching an episode or two of many of the new offerings this year, the one that stuck was Agents of SHIELD. The show wouldn't have been nearly as great were it not for Clark Gregg, who plays the mostly inscrutable Agent Phil Coulson. At first I was concerned that we weren't seeing what you'd expect to see whenever S.H.I.E.L.D. is mentioned: no Thor, Iron Man or other superheroes. But the writing surprised me, despite their absence.

Nick McHatton: No Netflix love? House of Cards and Orange is the New Black are absolutely stellar. Orange is the New Black especially brought together a unique and diverse cast that told emotional and captivating stories all while surviving the hell of prison.

Chandel Charles: Graceland on USA Network. It was a breath of fresh air as far as gritty drama goes and was almost like a better reboot of the late USA network show Common Law. Looking forward to its return in summer 2014.
