11 Grey's Anatomy Tragedies We Will Never, Ever Forget: What's #1?

at .

Grey's Anatomy, which begins its 11th season tonight, has dealt with its fare share of tragedies. More than the average hospital, we'd venture to say.

In fact, given some of the events that have transpired at Grey Sloan / Seattle Grace over the years, the board may want to considering renaming the place "007."

George, we miss you man.

Natural disasters. Cancer. Fatal crashes. Miscarriages, plural. Armed intruders. Countless losses, and not only patients, but among the doctors' own ranks.

In honor of Grey's Anatomy Season 11 Episode 1, check out 11 of the show's most tragic events to date, and scratch your head at why anyone still works there:

Cristina Yang had the right idea. We're going to miss her, and can't imagine the show without her, but let's be honest. Switzerland must look pretty good.

What other tragedies await Meredith, Derek, Alex, Calzona and the rest of the staff that has somewhat improbably survived all of these events and more?

They've already seen enough to last a lifetime, but that's unlikely to stop the producers of Shonda Rhimes' flagship show from bringing the pain once more.

Hey, the tears you've cried throughout these 11 events - and even that is paring down the list of candidates, which tells you a lot - have gotten them this far.

So scroll through the gallery above, tell us which stories still resonate with you all these years later, and which worthy shockers didn't make our list.

And as always, you can watch Grey's Anatomy online to revisit the events (if you have enough tissues on hand) from this season and past years.

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Arizona: Oh my God! I mean, I understand why you're into her. She's hot. Wait, she likes you?
Nathan: What? I mean, I'm going to try not to be offended at that.
Arizona: No, no, no. It's just that Derek was, Derek was epic for her. They were the great love story. I mean, that girl's heart beat for Derek Shepherd. It just, it never occurred to me that she would ever be with anyone else. He was perfect. He was everything. That man turned her world. It, I spooked you. Don't be spooked.

MEREDITH: "You don't get to call me a whore. When I met you, I thought I had found the person that I was going to spend the rest of my life with. I was done! All the boys and all the bars and all the obvious daddy issues, who cares? I was done. You left me. You chose Addison. I'm all glued back together now. I make no apologies for how I chose to repair what you broke. You don't get to call me a whore."
DEREK: "This thing with us is finished. It's over."
MEREDITH: "Finally."
DEREK: "Yeah, it's done."
MEREDITH: "It is done."
