Helix Season 2 Episode 9 Review: Ectogenesis

at .  Updated at .

I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of the Mycotic storyline, but I am rooting for Kyle. Will he survive?

Helix Season 2 Episode 9 explained ectogenesis, possibly gave us another immortal and introduced the Bleeding Tree.

It was cool to see Jules and Sergio arrive at the island. I'm curious to see what her reunion with Alan will be like.

Wasn't it great to see Doreen again? I honestly was not expecting the character to make an appearance this season, but that sure was cool. Another thing I wasn't counting on was meeting the Mycotics. How nasty were they and their eyeball soup?

While the search in the woods continued, Sister Anne tried to calm the survivors of the thinning. I was waiting for Sister Amy to make an entrance and she soon appeared to stir things up. She's something else, isn't she? Though I am getting a little bored of her now.

Amy inherited her father's gift of gab and turned everyone away from her mother. Not a surprise really.

Amy: Lies and more lies. Michael who called himself our brother fell prey to the evil words of the outsiders and now my mother is following his path.
Anne: How dare you speak to me that way?
Amy: I will speak to you in any way I like. We are no longer afraid of you and Michael.

Are Anne and Peter going to live happily ever after? Those two crazy kids deserve one another. I hoped when Peter's messages starting coming in that Balleseros would make an appearance. He sure has been underused this season. Then there he was, along with Julia in the present day. Their reunion with Peter was awkward, to say the least.

Meanwhile, Sarah sneaked into Michael's old study to look for her baby. That thing is creepy. "Can't, never; those are self defeating words," Amy told Sarah when she asked for immortality again. Didn't she annoy the hell out of you this week?

Still, we did get a little background on the ectogenesis (or synthetic womb) Michael created. So that's what the baby was floating in. Sarah actually shared the story of how she became immortal with the psycho-sister; unbelievable.

In the woods, the search team found one of the Coast Guard's guys with his eyes gouged out. Soup anyone?

Kyle: I've seen this before, when we first arrived.
Winger: Any idea what it means?
Alan: A trail marker maybe?
Kyle: Yeah, it's a trail marker.
Alan: You have a better theory?
Kyle: Yeah there are crazies out here saying go back wherever the hell you came from.

How quickly the team ran off and left Kyle alone. You'd think Alan would know better. I've had a bad feeling since day one that Kyle would not make it off the island. Was this the beginning of the end for Texas? Not quite yet, I guess.

That nasty Mycotic woman and her soup grossed me out. I'm not sure where this storyline is going, but I'm not really into it. It's plain nasty for nasty's sake. While I did enjoy the mystery of the Abbey, they need to wrap up the Mycotic thing quick.

Jules told the truth about Narvik C, but Anne considered it an "outside world problem." Can Julia guarantee Peter immunity from Ilaria and 100 million bucks? What an a-hole this guy turned out to be. I think I liked him better as the Vector King in Helix Season 1.

I couldn't believe Sarah allowed Amy to perform the spinal tap. What?!?

Amy: I don't know that I'd let anyone do this to me without anesthesia.
Sarah: I can't tell you what to do if I'm taking a nap.

The procedure worked, and I thought for a second there Amy was well on her way to immortality. Would Sarah have a chance to switch the syringe for the poisoned one? Let's face it, Amy's days are numbered. It's just a question of how she's taken out.

Of course, Landry volunteered to be the guinea pig. I can't believe that goon becomes immortal. Will Amy get stuck with him for all eternity?

I loved that Alan was knocked out by that log, it gave us a few more minutes with Doreen. Alan appeared to feel responsible for Kyle, having lost Doreen last season an all. I'm glad he's finally on the kid's side. Is it possible Kyle will survive after all? Plus, Soren told him about the Bleeding Tree which keeps the Mycotics alive. Is it wrong to hope he'll make it to a potential third season?

We also learned that "Mother" was a tree that absorbed a fungus which makes mortal men infertile. Is this also the Bleeding Tree? Was that root Michael tinkered with in an earlier episode part of it? I thought that was the same safe Anne opened earlier, as well.

Yeah the writers fooled me too, I actually thought Kyle was going to escape. Then he drank the damn honey. Since the Mycotics don't eat their own, he bought himself some time. Poor Kyle, they better find that Bleeding Tree.

What did you think of "Ectogenesis"? Are you digging the Mycotics? Have you had enough of Sister Amy? Is Landry now immortal? Will a cure be discovered in time to save Kyle? Your turn, go ahead and share your thoughts in the comments below.

As always, you can watch Helix online via TV Fanatic if you want to re-watch this wacky installment.

NOTE: Helix Season 2 Episode 10 is titled "Mother" and airs on Friday, March 20.
