Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 6 Review: We Should Have Seen This Coming

at .

How do you fight a group of people who are always one step ahead of you and know every move you make before you've even made it? That's the dilemma the Raza crew faced in Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 6.

The answer the protagonists came to in this episode basically amounted to, "You can't, so give up." And that left me deeply, deeply unsatisfied.

Nyx's Lead

Six episodes into the season, the character of Nyx finally got some background. (It seems wildly unlikely that she'd been flying around on the Raza for weeks and no one had demanded some sort of story from her.)

I had a big problem with how the crew reacted to Nyx lying to them and using them to free her brother from the seers. For some reason, only Three seemed to have a problem with it! Two's response came down to this rather weak statement:

Anyway, we all have issues with our past, right?

Two

Um, yeah, they all have issues with their pasts, but she intentionally put the crew in grave danger and lied about it and they then got the psychics chasing after them! I don't know about you, but I'd be seriously upset about that!

It came off like the scriptwriters wanted to just get past this point in the story to move on with all haste to the "being chased by the psychics" portion of the story. Either that, or Nyx is their new favorite character and even what is wrong is alright where she's concerned.

That's another problem I have, with Nyx as a character. She doesn't seem to have any flaws. Has she ever actually made a mistake, been wrong?

This actually feeds into yet another problem I have: the seers' apparent omniscience. They tried to explain this by combining "gut feeling" with massive amounts of data in a collective consciousness, but that only gets you so far and leaves out two major factors: chance and coincidence.

Nyx's actual prescience appears to only extend several seconds into the future, but the seers as a whole seemed to be unlimited in their predictive abilities. And without limits, that creates an essentially unbeatable opponent, which is really, really frustrating from an audience perspective.

One part of the episode I really did like was the Three-Six interactions, such as when they were stuck on the Marauder together. Stuck in a tin can together, surrounded by an acidic atmosphere that could strip the flesh from their bones, they finally were able to come to a sort of understanding.

Three, of all of the Raza crew, had held the biggest grudge over Six's betrayal, followed closely by Two. It was nice to see that he was willing to give Six the chance to prove himself as a member of the crew.

A few thoughts before I turn the discussion over to you:

  • Now that we know something about Nyx, would it be too much to ask for something about Devon? Man's a not-very-subtle drug addict, but no one's seemed to actually notice so far.
  • The seers sure seemed willing to fire on both the Marauder and the Raza, which had their star player (Milo) on board. I guess it's okay if he's blown up, just so long as he's not out there loose?
  • Four provided Milo with the knife to kill himself, then apparently neglected to tell Nyx what fate her brother likely chose.
  • Three's giddiness at getting down to a "good old-fashioned heist" made me grin. These people need to smile more!
  • Be sure to check out our Dark Matter quotes page for some of the notable lines from this episode.
  • The lingering distrust of Six portrayed throughout this episode really contrasts the speedy forgiveness given to Nyx.
  • Three has learned how to pilot the Marauder; character development is a good thing! Although:

Flying straight is not an evasive maneuver!
