Emerald City Season 1 Episode 3 Review: Mistress - New - Mistress

at .

There was plenty of confusion, fear, and anger on Emerald City Season 1 Episode 3 as Dorothy learns her mother was in Oz, Ana learns secrets about the Wizard, and Tip comes to terms with her new gender.

Illumination - Emerald City Season 1 Episode 3

The biggest question I have this hour is why, after watching East kill herself with the gun in Emerald City Season 1 Episode 1, didn't Dorothy remove the bullets? At least she should have put the safety on, though I would guess that Lucas would have figured out how to work the gun anyway.

Why didn't she just throw it in the water after she told him he shouldn't be playing with it? Oh, wait. We're getting a lesson here on the danger of guns. Dorothy is the irresponsible adult...Lucas is basically a child.

Yeah, I get it. Thank you, Emerald City, for setting us straight on that issue, though I'm going to guess that the gun issue isn't necessarily over yet.

Dorothy: You shouldn't have that.
Lucas: I don't think anyone should.
Dorothy: Give it to me.
Lucas: What's it called?
Dorothy: A gun.

Thanks to smart thinking by Lucas, Dorothy was saved from an early death by Eamonn. I'm not sure why she was so surprised that the Wizard wanted her dead. She knew that East was important, and she was the one who basically killed her...twice.

Even if that's not really the reason why the Wizard wants her dead.

But, it seems that Dorothy is just looking for trouble and eventually she's going to get what she wants. Luckily for her she has Lucas around who is quite determined to protect her even if she sometimes shuns it.

After learning about the Wizard's plans, Dorothy took a different route to get home and ended up at East's castle. If she can't get home via the yellow brick road, why not try to return via a cyclone?

I came here in a tornado. Maybe I can leave in one.

Dorothy

It's strange that Dorothy doesn't seem to be fazed about East's jewels covering her hands. This is the second time now, but at least the magic saved her and Lucas from getting killed by Sullivan.

I get that Dorothy wants to go home, but she only wants to go home because she wants another chance to meet her birth mother? What about Aunt Em and Uncle Henry who raised her? With all the weirdness happening around her, you'd think that Karen Chapman would be the last thing on her mind.

Beautiful Princess - Emerald City Season 1 Episode 3

But, then again, she's high on poppy so anything is possible including the fact that despite it all she has yet to freak out.  Maybe the poppy is keeping it at bay.

She was pretty calm during the whole purification ritual and weather calming ceremony that followed. She knew what dress to pick, but she guessed wrong on where she was supposed to go and ended up at a river where she found her birth mother's lab coat.

It sure seems like Oz has had many visitors from other lands over the years, including Karen Chapman.

Why was I not surprised by that?

Of course she takes the lab coat, because now she even more questions about her birth mom and apparently only the Wizard can answer them.

What I don't get is why the weather calmed after it consumed the castle center. I thought she grabbed the wrong object? Or was it really not calm, because the big hole in the sky was still there?

And maybe the prescription bottle that conveniently fell out of the lab coat for Eamonn to find was a prescription for Viagra since there's an impotence problem happening in the Emerald City.

Eamonn might get a gold star from the Wizard for that discovery. Maybe the Wizard will able to "raise the flag" once again or at least regain control of the giant warriors, if he really had control over them at all.

My name is Frank Morgan. Do you think my mother christened me The Wizard of Oz? I was a man before I was a wizard.

The Wizard

Now that Ana knows the Wizard's secrets, it's unclear what she will do with them. Locking her up isn't going to help him at all. Despite his anger at her for telling him what she knows, she's not going to stay locked up for long.

She predicted the snow. He scoffed when it didn't happen on the exact day, but the snow still came. There's no doubt that the Wizard is going to reinstate Ana. She knows a lot of things (outside of his secrets) and is exactly what he needs to combat the Beast Forever.

I'm not really sure what the Beast Forever is. I don't believe that it controlled those three women to kill themselves. If it's able to control those women, why not just make it's appearance known now? Why on a full moon?

No, someone else is behind that magic. It wasn't West, but that doesn't mean it couldn't have been Glinda. It's surprising that the Wizard didn't seek out Glinda to see if she was behind it.

Glinda - The Good Witch? - Emerald City Season 1 Episode 1

I'm getting the feeling that Glinda might know some secrets about Frank Morgan too, but then why is she staying silent?

I'm still curious as to how the Wizard was able to control the witches and stop them from using their magic. It might have to do with the giants and his harnessing lightning as Ana said.

I'm also going to take a leap and guess that Karen Chapman just might be a witch herself, though who knows if she's still alive. She was pretty much bleeding out in the first episode.

Dorothy's ability to take over East's "magic" would make more sense if she ended up being the child of a witch.

West is definitely broken. Why is she inking her fingers and the fingers of those in her brothel? Is it to mark them or for some other reason?

Magic was a drug even worse than poppy.

West

It bothers me that she's basically being held prisoner by the Wizard while Glinda is pretty much free to do what she wants.

It's a mystery that I hope is solved soon.

The other mystery is why Mombi was using magic to make Tip a boy instead of letting her be the girl she was born to be?

And, also, why did Jack feel the need to kiss her? That seemed so abrupt, but it did afford us the opportunity to see that there's definitely something different about Tip other than not really being a boy.

She was pretty angry about her situation. And confused too when she was trying to figure out which bathroom to use.

Which brings me to this whole gender issue. If Tip was so horrified at being a girl, why didn't she hide her boobs? Why"show them off" like the lady said?

She obviously had the means to hide them, so she could have done it earlier. It's not like she didn't know they were there. They were pretty hard to miss.

Also, did anyone else think that the City of Ev sort of looked like Diagon Alley from Harry Potter?

What did you think of "Mistress - New - Mistress"? What are your thoughts about Dorothy's mom being in Oz? Do you think the Beast Forever was really the one behind the women's possession? Are you still intrigued by Emerald City?
