Quantico: Renewed! Season 3 Shortened! Showrunner Exits!

Priyanka Chopra isn't staying at the beach with her Baywatch friends, as Quantico will be returning.

ABC has just announced the news, and Quantico Season 3 comes with some changes.

The season will no longer be stuffed full of filler episodes as it will contain only 13, and the hunt is on for a new showrunner.

Using a Party - Quantico

Creator Josh Safran, who had a two-year deal, is exiting as showrunner but will remain on the show as a consultant.

Talks for the renewal were extended after discussions about moving production from New York to Los Angeles proceeded.

And the licensing fee has also been cut as creative changes have been made to the ABC drama. Agents of SHIELD, Once Upon a Time and The Goldbergs have also cut their licensing fees.

A move from Sundays to Mondays did nothing to help the ratings, and Quantico actually plunged to series lows. When you add in seven days of DVR viewing, Quantico Season 2 averages 1.5 and 5 million viewers.

Personal Lives - Quantico

So what, exactly, scored the third season renewal?

You can count the international appeal of Chopra as one plus side for the drama.

Switching from an FBI focus to one on politics (and even President Trump) also helped.

As did a Netflix streaming deal for Quantico. Everybody loves a Netflix streaming deal, right?

ABC has no shortage of dramas for the 2017-18 season, with plenty of renewals and eight pickups.

While the 13 episode order could be due to the abundance of programming and American Idol scheduled to appear midseason, I don't think fans would be upset to learn the drama was cutting its order intentionally.

In Hiding - Quantico Season 2 Episode 21

It's a drama that could definitely benefit from tighter storytelling and less filler.
