Claws Season 1 Episode 2 Review: Funerary

Man plans and God laughs.

We got to laugh, too, while watching Claws Season 1 Episode 2.

Circumstances have given us yet another Odd Couple variation, with responsible Desna and scheming Virginia thrown together after killing Roller on Claws Season 1 Episode 1.

Unlikely Duo - Claws Season 1 Episode 2

It quickly became obvious these frenemies will face a rough road ahead. Since they, you know, can't stand each other.

I liked Desna's Viking boat funeral variation to get rid of Roller's body. Between the fire and the gators, there wasn't much left for the forensics team to use to trace a crime back to the frenemies. Besides, Roller seemed like a modern-day Viking.

Desna proved to be the brains of this pairing, playing her part as the grieving girlfriend just right. Although I don't understand why she was surprised that people she didn't know were aware of her and Roller. Small-town gossip, y'all.

I'm not sure what Virginia brings to the party other than surprising skills with a handgun. I wonder where she learned to shoot like a dead-eye dick.

As I see it, the problem is, as Desna pointed out, that Virginia is a shifty little thing. First, she went on the lam, then she invented a foreboding "them" on whom to put the blame. Virginia's survival instinct kept her from listening to Desna even when that might be the best thing for her.

Desna is either going to have to catch up or kiss her dreams goodbye for Dean and her friends. So she has to keep up her facade to protect those closest to her while trying to keep some kind of rein on Virginia.

Chasing after Virginia may already have cost Desna her dream salon, as the sleeper customer from the Glint Nails franchise got less-than-stellar service because the salon was short-handed. Since Desna is pretty crafty, I expect she'll find a way to get a second chance.

All for One - Claws Season 1 Episode 2

Now Roller's death promises to make Jenn and Bryce, a boring couple so far, much more interesting. "Abundance coach." That made me laugh!

Uncle Daddy naturally turned to his other "son," Bryce, to run the drug clinic. He's not the best choice for a couple of reformed substance abusers. But Uncle Daddy doesn't take well to the word "no," so I expect Jenn will lose that battle.

But it will be interesting to see how a relatively straight arrow such as Bryce will fit with the loons at the drug clinic and in the Dixie Mafia.

But none of them take the crown as the most colorful character on Claws.

That title is split, with part of it going to Carrie Preston's Polly, who I am loving. At first, I couldn't see that mild creature as a full-blown con artist. But after this hour, I've changed my mind.

First came her dialogue about sex with Quiet Ann. I believed that her libido led to her becoming "pregnant by a minor Kennedy."

Then was her story about being an upscale madam which kept her community-service girls spellbound. Well, until she lost them by naming aging celebrities such as Charlie Sheen and A-Rod. It took naming a Kardashian hanger-on to catch their attention again.

I can't wait to find out what other layers of Polly will be revealed in the future.

Edgy Sitdown - Claws Season 1 Episode 2

Then there's the brashest, most colorful character of all, Dean Norris' Uncle Daddy. We featured an interview with Norris earlier that you don't want to miss.

I mean, both his longtime wife, Wanda, and his boy-toy co-exist. And they do it in the same room.

Then, at the funeral reception, amid hip-hop music and blunts, he broke into an a cappella rendition of the classic hymn How Great Thou Art. And he did a fine job at it.

What I'm liking most about this series is its bizarreness.

That funeral procession was a classic: The naked portrait of Roller at the front, followed by strippers (complete with poles), bikers and what appeared to be a true cross-section of Palmetto, all to the soundtrack of Ave Maria.

Then Roller's Schwarzenegger's idolatry, with the reading from Ah-nuld's autobiography and the flower spray with "Hasta La Vista, Roller." That just seemed so appropriate for the muscle-bound lunk-head.

The blend of melodrama and absurdity just somehow works for this TNT original.

To catch up early in the series, watch Claws online.

Can Desna and Virginia work together? Will others get pulled into the cover-up? Will Bryce take Uncle Daddy's offer? Comment below.
