What's better than one Superman on CW's Supergirl?
Why, TWO former Lois Lanes, of course!
Erica Durance, who once played the teen version of Lois Lane on Smallville, will be assuming the role of Alura, Kara Zor El's mother, from Laura Benanti, who will be vacating the role for personal reasons.
Benanti, of course, has played the role since the pilot, so this might come as a shock for some viewers when the casting switch first plays out on TV.
But it IS the DC Universe, and Supergirl lives in National City on an alternate earth.
Fans are accustomed to the strange
It might be a lot of fun for fans of both Smallville and Supergirl to see another Lois Lane, too. Especially since Terri Hatcher, Lois and Clark's own Lois Lane has already been tearing up the place.
“Unfortunately Laura, who Greg and I have worked with for years going back to Eli Stone, was unable to continue in the role due to work commitments in NY, said executive producer Andrew Kreisberg.
“But we are so blessed that Erica has come aboard to offer her own interpretation of Kara’s mother.
"We had tremendous success with a former Lois Lane last season with Teri Hatcher.
"We know Erica will continue the proud tradition of legacy actors joining our shows and creating new and exciting takes on classic DC characters.”
The part will be recurring, so when and for how long Alura and her nasty twin Astra might be around is anybody's guess.
We know it will be exciting, though, and we can't wait to see if there will be a lot of fun Smallville references for those in the know. At the very least, some pokes at Lois Lane, right?
With the plethora of Lanes breezing through National City, we can't imagine anyone would want to pass up the opportunity to poke fun at it.
Durance may not have been on television in the US recently, but she just finished a seven season stint on Saving Hope in Canada.
It was an electrifying show set in a hospital with a slight supernatural edge. It also starred, for much of the run, Daniel Gillies from The Originals.
What do you think of this casting shake up?
Are you excited to have Alura/Astra back in any form? Or are you disappointed she'll come in a totally different body?
