The Bold Type: Cast and EPs Discuss "Friendship Porn" at ATX!

at .

We had the opportunity to sit down with a handful of other reporters to chat with executive producer Sarah Watson, co-executive producer Holly Whidden, Melora Hardin (Jacqueline), Katie Stevens (Jane), and Aisha Dee (Kat).

Hopefully, you’ve all already watched The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 1 and fallen in love with Kat, Jane, Sutton, and Jacqueline. If you haven’t watched yet, you need to exit this interview and go watch immediately. There are some spoilers for The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 1.

The Bold Type is set in, as Watson described it, “this heightened like wonderful, fantasy of a world.”

True Friends - The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 2

Dee described The Bold Type as “a nice Tuesday night guilty pleasure. Sit on the couch and like escape for a while into this world that maybe is a little elevated, but it’s something we can all relate to.”

Jane, Sutton, and Kat are our introduction into this world. Watson had this to say about the girls’ friendship: “I call it ‘friendship porn’ because these are the friendships of your fantasies that you wish you had.”

For Watson, it was important to show that Jane, Sutton, and Kat “are good friends, and they do support each other.”

Watson continued, “Because that’s something else I feel like we don’t see on TV a lot. We see sort of these frenemies, we see a lot of backstabbing, especially in a workplace where everyone is competitive. We see a lot of competition. So yes they fight and they go through tiffs, but ultimately they always have each other’s backs.”

The friendship doesn’t end when the cameras stop rolling either. Whidden explained, “We encouraged them to spend time together, and they all went to New York for a weekend.”

Watson chimed in, “I was getting selfies from the three of them all weekend!”

Planning for the Future - The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 2

Stevens stated that the three girls, “just vibed with each other.” Stevens and Dee even joked that they were suffering separation anxiety since Meghann Fahy (Sutton) wasn’t at ATX Festival.

Watson said that the girls, “really do embody those characters. And the friendship feels so real and natural on screen,” so Watson gave the girls a bit more freedom with their lines.

Watson explained, “I come out of Parenthood where we were a little fast and loose with the dialogue on set, and so I encouraged them to do the same because they just have a natural energy with each other.”

Watson stated, “I think some of our most magical moments are when they are sort of just riffing with each other.”

Stevens shared something she hopes will happen when people watch: “When you watch Sex & The City, you know everyone’s like, ‘I’m a Carrie. I’m a Samantha. I’m a Charlotte.’ And I hope that people like watch our show and like get those feelings.”

Stevens continued, “Because I feel like Kat is so specifically identifiable with somebody who is like Kat, and somebody who is like Jane, who is a little bit more Type A, and somebody who is like Sutton. And I hope that people are like, ‘I’m a Jane, and I’m a Kat,’ you know?”

Out of curiosity, who are you? I’m a Jane.

A Challenging Column - The Bold Type

There’s still so much to learn about the girls. We catch a glimpse into Jane’s childhood on The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 1, and Stevens shared that there’s more to come: “The most emotional episode is that episode that delves into my characters backstory and life and things she had to deal with growing up, so that was wonderful.”

Stevens specified, “We find out that Jane lost her mom.”

Dee jumped in, “That was my favorite episode to read, episode 6.” She stated that it is “such a beautiful episode. That’s the one I can’t wait for people to see for many reasons. It’s also just a really fun episode.”

On The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 2, Watson teased that we will see more of Kat and Adena’s relationship: “We’re going to get to know that character better and get to know her struggles and challenges, and we’re going to get to see her challenge Kat.”

Watson described Kat as “a character who presents like she’s got it all together.”

Watson stated that Kat’s a “classic millennial. She was the over-praised girl who doesn’t know enough to know that she shouldn’t always be confident.”

Adena, according to Watson, “ is sort of the first girl who is really able to challenge Kat and throw her off her game. It’s really fun to see, and they are so good together.”

Art Show - The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 2

Stevens and Dee are also excited for everyone to see The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 2. Stevens says that Jane and Kat “get like very close.”

Dee chimed in, “It’s so intimate.”

Stevens shared this tidbit to hold us over until the episode airs: “Just remember this. Just remember these two words: yoni egg.”

“Google it if you need to, I don’t know, get educated,” Dee added.

Hardin teased that she is “very, very excited for the finale for my character,” and sadly she would not share any more than that.

Dee joked that on The Bold Type, we will “get to see [her] do cardio on the show, which won’t happen in real life.”

Stevens said that she and Meghann Fahy “are gym rats, so we’re always exercising and all of this stuff and Aisha like does yoga at home.”

Dee commented that instead of hitting the gym, she’ll “meditate and meet you for food after.”

We will get to see Kat exercising in scenes.

Dee recalled: “They’re like, ‘you’re cycling in this episode, and then you run down the street.’ I’m like, ‘what? What?!’ I want to sit on this couch, and I’ll do the scene from here like this.”

Adena: You know, there's a lot more inside of a woman than what you can see on the outside.
Kat: Yeah I know, there's a lot more inside of me too.

And I expect you to unleash holy hell on anyone who tries to hold you back because you don't just work for Scarlet, you are Scarlett.
