The Night Shift Season 4 Episode 4 Review: Control

If blood makes you queasy, The Night Shift Season 4 Episode 4 was not for you.

It was spilling all over the place; in the ER and on the battlefield.

Miraculously, despite all the blood loss, both patients survived.

The "religion vs modern medicine" conflict is a hot-button topic and one that medical shows love to tackle.

In fact, Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 22 just recently did a similar storyline regarding a child with a brain tumor.

The Night Shift put its own spin on it though. Most of the time when we see this conflict on TV, the patient is dealing with something life threatening, as with the kid on Grey's.

Tina wasn't dying when she came to SAM, but she simply couldn't live with the horrific tumor on her face anymore.

It is hard to imagine what she must have had to deal with on a day to day basis, especially as a teenager in high school where kids can be incredibly cruel.

So, when Scott and Paul gave her the unbelievable news that they can remove the tumor, for a few seconds, it was the happiest moment of her life.

All of that is why it's not hard to grasp why Tina made such a terrible split second decision.

Stop! - The Night Shift Season 4 Episode 4

If she had taken a moment to think and process the situation, maybe she would have been able to convince herself that she could live with this condition for two more years, until she turned 18.

She'd already survived as long as she had with it, what's two more years in the grand scheme of things?

But when she took that scalpel to her face, she had no idea how close she would come to actually killing herself.

If she had died, it would have been incredibly tragic.

But, thanks to Scott's determination and refusal to give up, she lived.

To be honest, it was a little hokey. She was down for 61 minutes after all. At least Scott has his mojo back now.

It was crazy that her grandfather was still trying to refuse the transfusions even after he saw so much of her blood spill onto the floor of the ER. There was no way she was going to live without it. Luckily by that point, the decision had been taken out of his hands.

A Rescue Mission - The Night Shift

There was less focus on TC and Syria, as most of the action stayed in San Antonio, but he still had time to butt heads with and then save a soldier on the battlefield.

We knew there'd be consequences to his actions from The Night Shift Season 4 Episode 3 and doing whatever it took to save that boy, but if that's all it was, then it was definitely worth it.

The rescue mission was a complete success, and the injured soldier survived, so it was a win-win for everybody.

Of course, there was that whole suspicious moment where Amira was clearly sneaking some pills. It's only a matter of time until it's revealed she's addicted to painkillers or something.

Jordan and Mac - The Night Shift Season 4 Episode 4

It looks like we'll be seeing more of Mac around the hospital.

Jordan: Do you want a job?
Mac: Nice segue. Yeah, how 'bout tight end for the Bears?
Jordan: They could totally use one, but actually I was thinking about here, at SAM.

I like the idea of him sticking around and leading an outreach program for vets, but his cancer situation pretty much means we're in for a tragic ending, barring another Tina-esqe miracle.

After two major deaths already, we are better off not getting too attached to Mac if we can help it.

Speaking of, it was odd there was no mention of Annie. Someone leaping from a bridge would probably be pretty big news, so it's unlikely no one has heard about it.

I had wondered if her death was part of the reason Scott couldn't let Tina go, but nope, it's as if it never happened.

As for Drew's patient...

Wow, do people really fake illnesses just to rate customer service at hospitals? That's ridiculous. Can't they get actual sick people to write a review?

Drew's way of handling the situation was priceless. That guy deserved the scare Drew gave him.

Everything after that though was just weird. First of all, Drew needs to password protect his phone.

Second of all. I don't care if his intentions were good, that was a major invasion of privacy. He's lucky a very irritable and sleep deprived Drew didn't punch him in the face.

So, how did you guys feel about the miracle save?

Did you find it heartwarming or was it just too cheesy?

Are you worried about getting too attached to Mac and having him ripped away by season's end?

Were you surprised there was no mention of Annie?

The Night Shift Season 4 Episode 4 Quotes

Kenny: I freakin' hate that guy and his little kit. Guy's always making these wooden carvings for the nurses.
Drew: Good point. What a dick.
Kenny: My point is, it's all a show. I mean who the hell wants these little animal carvings anyway?
Drew: So I guess I shouldn't show you the adorable dolphin he made for Brianna?

Cain: Hey, have you guys seen my wood?
Nurse: Excuse me?
Cain: My wood. It's missing.
Nurse: Vicki, have you seen this man's wood?
Vicki: I certainly have not.
Jordan: Doctor you might wanna, you know, elaborate.
