No other casting details were revealed with the announcement.

There were rumblings earlier this year that the series was being revived with Ali as the star, but HBO declined to comment.

Now, the network has dropped some hints about what fans can expect from the plot.

The next installment tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods,” reads the logline.

Ali's character will be a state police officer named Wayne Hays.

With three timelines in the mix, it sounds like a lot of big names could join the show to fill the world and what are sure to be brilliant characters.

Series creator, Nic Pizzolatto will continue to have a big involvement with the series, since has written all of the episodes.

One of the episodes was co-written with David Milch of Deadwood fame.

“Nic has written truly remarkable scripts,” says HBO president Casey Bloys.

“With his ambitious vision and Mahershala Ali and Jeremy Saulnier aboard, we are excited to embark on the next installment of True Detective.”

Adds Pizzolatto: “I’m tremendously thrilled to be working with artists at the level of Mahershala and Jeremy. I hope the material can do justice to their talents, and we’re all very excited to tell this story.”

True Detective Season 1 was very successful. The series won a string of awards and viewers enjoyed the dark tone that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson to television.

But things fell apart with True Detective Season 2. Critics and viewers did not react well to the follow-up and felt like it lacked the spark that made its predecessor a success.

Time will tell.
