Kevin (Probably) Saves the World Season 1 Episode 4 Review: How to Be Good

This show is slowly starting to find its groove.
I've gushed over Jason Ritter in previous reviews, so forgive me if you're bored of hearing me say this, but he is just such a delight to watch. And on Kevin (Probably) Saves the World Season 1 Episode 4 he got a chance to truly show what he's capable of.
While this episode was probably the funniest one yet this season, there were still some heartfelt moments that keep this one from veering too far into the comedy category. And that can sometimes become a chore for dramedies. Once they start leaning too much on the comedy, it's hard to take the dramatic stuff seriously.
No matter how comical some of Kevin's missions can be, there will always be the seriousness of the mission at hand. We must never forget the premise of this show after all.
The worst people sometimes are the ones who need the most kindness. Everyone deserves a chance to be better, Kevin. You got one.

I wondered aloud after Kevin (Probably) Saves The World Season 1 Episode 3, whether or not Kevin would ever help people who weren't necessarily good. I didn't have to wait long because he is tasked with dealing with not one, but two women who take divine pleasure in belittling everyone around them.
We get to know Lucille the best, as she works alongside Tyler at Frankie's and she blatantly asks Kevin for help in getting an antique clock out of a storage unit. Kevin gets the family heirloom without asking any of the important questions and soon finds out that he stole the clock from Lucille's sister, Ann.
Lucille and Ann are both pretty terrible people. It's clear that their Dad inflicted some wicked psychological abuse on them as children and as adults, they've bottled up all that pain. This pain has manifested into anger and they unleash it on others often.
It was a nice play by the show to make us think Lucille was nuts about her sister by making Ann seem like an absolute peach when she first meets Kevin. But once she hears that her precious antique clock is missing, she turns into Lucille times two.
Ann: Lucille has been ruining my life since we were kids. And now she's hired this low rent gigolo to rip me off!
Kevin: Low rent?
Once Ann demanded that Kevin retrieve her clock by any means necessary, it was obvious things were going to come to a head.
With Reese following Kevin around at all hours it appears, she's able to warn him that the cops are coming, since he's, you know, inside Lucille's house trying to steal the clock back.
Let's talk about Reese for a second. I can't figure out if I'm a fan or not. I like that they are trying to expand her role beyond the obligatory sulky teenager, but it seems a bit soon to have her wrapped up in missions. Or maybe I'm overthinking it.
Anyway, Kevin's weekly vision comes while he's on the run from the cops. He's transported to what appears to be an outdoor market somewhere in Asia. We don't see much beyond that but we do hear a baby crying before he snaps back to reality.
I'm going to need to make a list of all the visions and see if I can start to link them together somehow.
This show is best enjoyed when you suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride, so I'm not going to get into how ludicrous it is that Kevin is caught redheaded breaking into a house and fleeing from the cops and isn't even given a slap on the wrist.
Kevin goes free, thanks to an assist from Tyler and his damaging of the clock actually helps to temper the tension between the sisters, as they commiserate over how awful their Dad was to each of them.
So Kevin notches another win and continues to get himself closer to finding the other righteous souls. It's been smooth sailing for him so far, which means that he's due for some disappointment any day now. No mission is ever complete without a few failures along the way, right?
Loose Ends
- Anyone else yearning for more information about Yvette? Like how does she change clothes so often? And did she not like that sandwich or can she really not eat? I love learning that she never sleeps, until recently, but I want to know more.
- Amy was given very little to do again and I'm going to need that to change.
- This show has a Kristin problem and they need to figure it out. She pops up for about 10 seconds this week and then disappears for the rest of the hour. I assume she's supposed to be the long-term love interest for Kevin, but how are we supposed to root for that when we hardly know her?
- Tyler and Kevin's relationship is slowly becoming my favorite thing. Tyler really is a good guy underneath it all.
Okay guys, as things keep chugging along, I'm wondering how you guys are feeling about the progress of the series. Did you like the storyline this week? Will Reese figure out what's going on with Kevin? Will Kevin be allowed to just tell her?
