Supergirl Round Table: Is Sanvers Doomed?

at .

We were introduced to two new characters who will most likely cause trouble for our heroes on Supergirl Season 3 Episode 1

Below, TV Fanatics Jay Ruymann, Andy Behbakht, Christine Orlando, and Kathleen Wiedel discuss their thoughts on newbies Sam and Morgan, Kara's grief, and whether or not there will be a Sanvers wedding.

Join us!

What are your thoughts on how Kara is dealing with her grief by suppressing her humanity?

Jay: I hope this ends soon and she goes back to embracing Kara Danvers. I was excited at the beginning of Supergirl Season 2 to see more of Kara Danvers and Kara attempt to figure out who she is as Kara Danvers and not Supergirl, but that didn’t really happen. So I’m hoping this season will start that journey for real.

Andy: It was definitely the most difficult aspect of the premiere for me. I absolutely understand where she is coming from, but I'm never a fan of "Superhero Gives Up On Humanity When Losing A Partner" plot. If Mon-El had died, which she can't know, I would be more understanding.

It physically hurt my heart when seeing Kara lash out on James and Alex. I do think the ending of the premiere was good though, showing us signs that her dark mood will fade quickly. But again, this is Supergirl Season 3, which is always when a genre show makes it its darkest year of all time.

Christine: I thought it was realistic but not a heck of a lot of fun to watch. Kara is in hell. She doesn’t know if Mon-El is dead or alive, or if she will ever see him again. I enjoyed the lightheartedness of the Kara/Mon-El relationship, so having him gone and having her deal with such darkness is really depressing.

Kathleen: I think Christine makes a good point – while Kara's behavior may be realistic, it doesn't make for particularly enjoyable television. Misery and depression generally don't make for a fun hour.

On a more analytical note, I can't imagine this plot will stick around for very long (thank goodness) since the idea of balancing a normal life with a superhero life (especially since Kara is an actual extraterrestrial) is part of this show's DNA.

Getting Some Help - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 1

Will we see a Sanvers wedding this season, or is it doomed by Floriana Lima's recurring status?

Jay: I believe it’s doomed. Something is going to happen to make Maggie leave National City and only be a visitor going forward. I’m thinking maybe with the appearance of her father, and from what she said in this episode, she’ll have a chance to reconnect with her relatives. That’s the only way I’d be happy to see her leave.

Andy: I can't imagine that a wedding will actually happen between these two given the news about Lima stepping down as a series regular back in the spring.

Christine: I’m so looking forward to this wedding, but I’ll be shocked if it actually happens. Delightfully shocked, but shocked just the same. With all of the Kara/Mon-El darkness, I desperately want Sanvers to be my happy place.

Kathleen: I don't think that Floriana Lima's recurring status will kill a wedding this season. If anything kills it, it will be the dreaded DRAMA monster.

Wedding Bells? - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 1

We were introduced to Samantha. Are you looking forward to watching her develop into the villain, Reign?

Jay: It’s interesting, for sure. I wonder what the explanation is for her powers never showing before this episode, and where she goes from here. I fear I’ll like Samantha and will be conflicted by her journey to evil.

Andy: It was solid, not too much nor too little. We got just enough of her to wonder more what's coming up for her. I think Samantha's evolution into Reign will have parallels with Smallville's Davis Bloome who was Doomsday.

Christine: I have no comic book background, so I’m clueless as to what’s to come. That said, I’m really intrigued by Samantha, and I loved how she saved her daughter. I’m looking forward to finding out where her powers come from and why she seems to be connected to Kara in their dreams.

Kathleen: I'm with Christine; never read the comics, so I have no expectations here. I do hope they take advantage of the dramatic potential, however.

Meet Sam - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 1

How do you feel about Morgan Edge? Is he just another Maxwell Lord?

Jay: I think he’s a less dangerous version of Lord. He’s less against aliens than against Lena and going forward, I think he’ll be her nemesis and maybe even tempt her to go dark. I don’t see him being involved with Supergirl or the DEO much.

Andy: He can't be another Maxwell Lord because Maxwell was boring as hell! Adrian Pasdar is a magnificent actor and plays good/bad guys so well. I like that Lena has a personal baddie. I just hope Morgan's role on the show leads to something Intergang related down the line.

Christine: I love Adrian Pasdar but hated Morgan Edge’s smarmy, condescending attitude with Lena. It made him more nauseating than entertaining. I’m already dreading seeing more of him.

Kathleen: Adrian Pasdar is great, but I'm with Christine. Does Morgan Edge have to be so obviously hatable?

Ducking Laser Guns - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 1

What was your favorite quote or scene?

Jay: I really loved seeing Cat Grant as the Press Secretary and her quote about the President believing in global warming because she’s “not a moron.” Such a perfect position for her, but I miss Cat as a series regular so much.

Andy: Anything with Lena Luthor in it was my favorite scenes of the episode. I do agree with Jay though; I miss Calista Flockhart as a series regular on the show too. My favorite quote, however, was from Alex Danvers herself. "Kara Danvers is my favorite person!"

Christine: I enjoyed it when Alex asked J’onn to walk her down the aisle at her wedding, and then they both teared up. “Don’t cry. If you cry then I’m going to cry and then everybody’s going to know that we actually can cry.” That was really sweet.

Kathleen: The request for J'onn walking Alex down the aisle is just so heartfelt and meaningful. Usually, it would be one's father performing such a duty – the relationship between J'onn and Alex has been the most complex and developed relationship in the series aside from the sisterly one between Alex and Kara.

It says a lot that Alex wants him to be there for her in such a way.

Alex Has a Secret - Supergirl Season 3 Episode 1

Grade the premiere.

Jay: C. I hope this season is better than Supergirl Season 2.

Andy: B.

Christine: C+ Between Kara’s depression and the icky Morgan Edge, I wasn’t happy with this premiere, but I hope things get better soon.

Kathleen: Let's split the difference and call it a B-. Not super-awesome, not super-awful.

Supergirl Season 3 Episode 1 Quotes

Winn: I thought it was bad when she skipped pizza night, but skipping free apps? I mean, come on. These are like the beginning of the dark days.
J'onn: Hey, come on, grief doesn't have a deadline.
Winn: Look, I know, but I mean, she goes from being little miss sunshine to, well, Alex basically.
Alex: What? I'm not like that.
J'onn: Oh come on Alex, your unrelenting seriousness is one of your best qualities.

Reporter: Does President Marsden believe climate change is real?
Cat: Yes, Carl, as a matter of fact she does. She also believes that two plus two equals four, and that the Earth is round, because the President is not a moron.
