The Lord of the Rings film series may be a thing of the past, but the franchise is far from over.

Amazon today confirmed that it has snapped up the global TV rights to J.R.R. Tolkien's hit fantasy novel series.

The deal includes multi-season commitment and the option of expanding the franchise even further with an additional spin-off series.

The series will air as an Amazon Prime Original, joining the likes of The Man in the High Castle, The Tick, and Transparent.

It is said to take place before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring and will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema.

“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” Amazon scripted chief Sharon Tal Yguado said in a statement.

“We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” said a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins.

“Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

The news is unsurprising when you consider the fact that it was confirmed just over a week ago that multiple outlets were interested in bringing the franchise back to life by way of another TV series.

It's definitely up there as one of Amazon's most high-profile series to date, and its success will depend on the talent attached to the project.

Will it be the next Game of Thrones or will it become another Of Kings and Prophets?!

Considering Game of Thrones is coming to an end in in the near future, there will be some space for another fantasy epic in our lives, so this news is exciting.
