DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 12 Review: The Curse of the Earth Totem

at .  Updated at .

For not knowing much about pirates, Amaya certainly was the greatest and most inspiring pirate of all time.

I'll admit, I wasn't particularly keen to tune into DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 12 because stories about pirates are, more often than not, dreadful, terribly written and just all-around boring to watch.

That said, this episode quickly became my favorite of the season.

Perhaps it was Amaya's most interesting performance since being introduced to the team that made this episode so compelling.

Amaya: Why’s everyone staring at me?
Mick: If there’s one thing pirates love more than treasure, it’s a good story.

This performance is possibly the greatest we've ever seen on Legends of Tomorrow or any of the DCTV shows for that matter. It was raw, real, and it surprisingly wasn't oversold. Often, the worst part of pirate-themed anything is the overkill of the performance.

It was nice to see Amaya have to use her other skills to get by. Her totem — as much as it is a part of her — has become something she's relied on in every fight, but Amaya is a great fighter and has a vast amount of skills in her repertoire.

Also, Amaya's only stories seem to have Nate (and/or Kuasa) involved, so it was quite refreshing to see Amaya as a character of her own rather than a plot device for someone else's story.

Could Amaya be the one to bear the earth totem? Yes, she uses the spirit totem primarily, but she's lost that, and there's not really anyone else to use the totems, especially because no one could control them.

Changing Amaya's abilities, temporarily, could be interesting and lead to silly, confusing, regular Legends of Tomorrow antics that make the show so unique, but we could also see Amaya in a different light. How would different powers impact her?

I hope the show attempts to have Amaya use abilities she's unfamiliar with and pushes her character further outside of her box with it because, at this point, she's getting kind of bland. (Other than in this episode, of course, but this won't last.)

Nate: It’s the devil’s triangle.
Ray: It’s just a myth.

Ray Palmer is such an idiot. Man, after everything Damien and Nora Darhk have done to them, it doesn't make sense for Ray to go back and try to save someone who has tried to kill him multiple times.

No, Ray hasn't killed anyone personally, so it's kind of an adjustment, but he did it to save Amaya's life. It's not like Nora dying is a big loss to them anyway, and it could have solved a lot of their problems.

It's infuriating this would happen because it is something that would've happened during Legends of Tomorrow Season 1, not now after everything Ray has seen aboard the Waverider.

This entire side plot was just to get Ray kidnapped, which, again, is unnecessary and is taking time away from the team getting anything done.

Maybe that’s why I never fit on Team Flash.

Wally

Who else is excited about Wally coming aboard the ship? It could be a really good move for the team, especially since this show could use Wally to his full potential.

Wally was never going to be the hero he wanted to be in Barry's shadow, so it's exciting that he's finally embarking on a mission of his own and getting a team that believes in his skills... or will shortly.

It really seems like the perfect fit for Wally to be on this show, but I don't understand the need for Rip get Wally to join the Legends.

Yes, he brought together the original team, but Zari, Amaya, and Nate all joined without Rip's interference, so why did they specifically bring him back for Wally? Just to use the character?

It seems my days of legending are over.

Rip

Rip is one of the most useless characters in the DCTV universe, and I really wish the show would quit floundering for reasons to use him. Kill Rip, send him back to the future — just get rid of him.

Ava basically serves the same function that Rip did, and she's far more interesting and useful to the story than he ever could be.

Sara and Ava's date definitely ended as a disaster, but it's nice to see Sara happy.

For her first real date since getting on the Queen's Gambit with her sister's boyfriend, it went well. Sara definitely needs a bit of normal in her life, and she needs something (or someone) to keep her happy.

While something like that shouldn't often be revisited, it could do the well to have scenes similar to this between characters to show them as regular people. Sometimes it's easy to forget they're not just superheroes.
