Station 19 Season 1 Episode 5 Review: Shock to the System

at .  Updated at .

On Station 19 Season 1 Episode 5, the secret's out about Jack and Andy. Meanwhile Ben experiences his first loss as a firefighter.

Since I've had the most to say about Andy, we'll start with her.

She was less annoying than she has been, but she's still the most self-centered character I've seen in a while.

Maya and Andy Fight - Station 19 Season 1 Episode 5

She's not there for her friends, and even though she tried to redeem herself with Maya by being there for her, I wasn't buying it.

Andy is one of those friends who only talks about herself, and when you have something going on in your life, the conversation somehow always turns back to her.

If I had known about the two of you, I would've never put you both up for the captain position.

Captain

Ugh.

Thank goodness the focus is shifting away from the captain's race because that's getting old already.

Maya is way too easy on Andy. Getting to know Maya, though, I don't think she'll put up with Andy for much longer, especially if she jerks Ryan around, which she will do. We see it happen already!

Montgomery Discovers the Truth - Station 19 Season 1 Episode 5

The sheets are still warm from Jack's side of the bed, for Pete's sake, and she's knocking on Ryan's door.

Girl, relax!

You don't deserve Ryan! Not now and probably not ever. One of the main reasons she's running over there is because she saw a spark between Maya and Ryan.

Dirty. That's just dirty pool.

Bailey: Ah, yes, the puppy guy.
Miller: I prefer puppy man.

Maya and Ryan, though, down the road? Yes, I can see that. It's a better fit.

I know I've said Andy and Ryan have history, and they do, but history does not a relationship make. The clouds are parting, the angels are singing, and I see Maya and Ryan in the future.

The shift in focus came when things got real for Ben. I love storylines that come full circle and tie into a tragic little bow.

Miranda Bailey Visits - Station 19

We're in Shondaland, people, and the tear-jerking episodes are going to happen. They are. It's part of what we sign up for when we watch these types of dramas. It's funny the heartbreak wasn't for any of the characters we're getting to know but for the sweet husband and his wife.

Tragic.

Okay. When you have something to spill and you don't spill, you make angels cry.

Vic

I hope we see more of that. Not because I like to cry or because I like my heart broken (or yours) but because safely experiencing that level of emotion, through a story, is why we watch dramas. If we didn't like that, we would pick another genre to follow.

I almost hate to put this next prediction out there, but you know I have to do it anyway. It's about Ben. I love him and Miranda together, but I smell trouble. He's already stopped talking to her about his job, which is a huge part of his life now. So, who do you think he's going to start talking to next?

Vic.

Miller Kiss - Station 19 Season 1 Episode 5

That's right. As much as I hate to say it, something is going to happen between Ben and Vic. Miranda doesn't want to hear anything about the dangerous parts of Ben's job, so he clams up and holds it in. Pretty soon he's going to need somebody to talk to, and that person is going to be Vic.

Maya

I don't know if it will blossom into a full-blown affair, and I really hope it doesn't, but there's going to be some kind of extra-marital intimacy betrayal at some level, and it's going to cause problems in the Warren household.

I'm not looking forward to that ride.

Once again Miller captures my heart. His sweet disposition mixed with his awkwardness makes him very endearing. I look forward to his scenes, and I'm excited to follow his character through whatever he's going to go through.

One thing I'm confused about is how in the world nobody knew about Andy and Jack being together (besides Maya). They all practically live together. They eat together, sleep together, and work together, so how are they all surprised by this new revelation?

First of all, Andy and Jack aren't that slick to keep their love affair completely on the down-low. Second, all of the firefighters in the station are not that clueless! Part of their job is observation and assessing their surroundings.

Hello!

How do you feel about Andy going after Ryan? What did you like most about this episode? Do you think Ben will stay true to Miranda? Did your heart break during the last phone call between the husband and wife?
