Westworld Season 2 Episode 5 Review: Akane No Mai

at . Comments

That was a very neat twist and one for which we owe Lee Sizemore.

Now as new worlds are introduced, it will be important to look for our favorites in a slightly different capacity.

It was Armistice who first recognized their ragtag group had doppelgangers roaming Showgun World on Westworld Season 2 Episode 5, and she spent the rest of her time mirroring the girl with the dragon tattoo.

While it was fun getting to know the new group of characters with so much in common with Maeve's posse, the real focus of "Akane No Mai" seemed to be on the strength building in both Maeve and Wyatt.

Not only are they becoming increasingly more powerful as the days go on, but they're taking advantage of their abilities in much different ways. Maeve has embraced the best of who she is, and although she's still required to be violent due to circumstance, most of her actions come from the love she feels at her core.

Wyatt, on the other hand, is recalling the harsher lessons she learned in life about survival. She loves her father, of that there is no doubt, but she has no time left for femininity and compassion. She sees a means to an end and will do whatever necessary to get there, even if it means changing those she loved.

Picking up right where the Maeve/Sizemore group left off on Westworld Season 2 Episode 3, a Samurai warrior was running sword first toward the group. It could have been a disaster, but Maeve sort of amused the man by assuming she could talk him out of it.

Musashi was also likely reminded of Akane. Maybe he even spotted Armistice and her snake tattoo thinking something was awfully familiar about the whole group.

Instead of killing anyone, they were all taken hostage, and Maeve had her mouth gagged. That touch was cute and took a bit of the fear out of the exchange.

I never fully understood the story of the Shogun World counterparts. Was Sakura Akane's daughter or was she a daughter figure by way of the Geisha house? Likely, it doesn't matter, as Akane had for her the same feelings Maeve understood from her days on the prairie.

Akane and Maeve are a lot alike, and even though that's the case, I'd still like to explore them more together and as individuals. Just because Sizemore wrote two of the same stories in different worlds doesn't mean their stories didn't diverge at some points.

That would be most interesting to discover especially since they became sentient without being forced to go there. Maeve and Hector found their way to each other long before sentiency was an issue and is something Hector cannot understand.

It seems the same is true of Akane and Musashi.

Hector sitting back and watching Musashi from across the room was telling since it means he cannot trust himself in the same situation in which he was watching Musashi.

And if you're asking if you can trust Akane, the real question is if you can trust yourself.

Of course, Maeve has been playing with their programming a bit since they've been sentient, so they could be different enough that the issue of trust might not be that easy.

It was good that they could all come together and fight with each other against a large army.

I don't know why I find anything with ninjas to be so damn funny, but I do, and Sizemore running down the stairs screaming about them was welcome comic relief before the next round of carnage began.

Shit! Ninjas! Oh, fucking hell!

Through it all, Maeve was honing her voice. Whatever it is she has in her head, she's giving commands with her mind.

It made the whole group quite forceful. They looked to be in trouble as another army was coming at them, but it wasn't even enough to make Maeve grimace. She knows now she can handle anything.

Yes, I want her to hold onto her new friends. She might need them when she again comes up against Wyatt.

Sizemore: Jesus! What do we do now?
Maeve: I told you, I found a new voice. Now we use it.

There isn't a Dolores left anymore. After she saw Teddy betray her by letting Craddock go, she's been playing brain teasers with him, and he loses every time.

Wyatt is under the impression emotions make you weak. We see with Maeve they make you stronger. Being in touch with the good inside of you is special, and it's possibly why she can manipulate people with her mind.

Wyatt is not a nice person. She left all that was good behind in Dolores. She's not looking back.

Teddy: They built us to perform for them and for each other. That's over. I saw you tonight, Dolores. And you saw me.
Wyatt: I did see you, Teddy. These past few days, I've seen you so clearly. And I've seen you're not going to make it.

Teddy was relieved that they made love and found a way to see each other. But he's kind-hearted and saw her from that perspective. Wyatt was warned that turning up the evil and cruel side of his personality could be too much for him without being wiped completely first.

As the hour began, we saw a pile of bodies -- Teddy included -- who were devoid of any past whatsoever. That timeline seems to be from the lake on Westworld Season 2 Episode 1. They must have been pulled from it and when probed discovered there's nothing left in there. All intellectual property was wiped clean.

I'll be interested to see who is the cause of that. Was it a result of something Wyatt did or did Maeve do something to put them out of their misery?

It seems the two powerful women are going to be at the center of whatever happens in these worlds, and they're going to come up against each other. I don't think Wyatt will come out on the winning side.

What about you? What did you make of this new world, the doppelgangers, and the way the two women leading the charge are doing it so differently?

I'd love to hear from you!
