Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 13 Review: Blackjack

Our survivor's luck may have just run out.

On Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 13, Morgan continued his search for his friends, Luciana attempted to help a stranger, and John and Strand came face to face with a vicious set of gnawing teeth.

And they didn't belong to a walker!

What's That Sound? - Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 13

It was good to see what Luciana had been up to since storming off after Charlie on the mid-season premiere.

Luciana is easily my least favorite character on the show right now, so I don't really care for putting much focus on her. But if one positive came of Luciana's story during this episode, it's that we learned some vital information, even if the path leading to it was ridiculously predictable.

Clayton: You look like you've been through the ringer. Why would you want to help a total stranger?
Luciana: I have some things to make up for.
Clayton: Don't we all.

It didn't take much to put two and two together that the man who Luciana tried to help was, in fact, the man whose truck was stolen by Sarah and Wendell.

What were the odds that Luciana would have bumped into the trucker who started the whole "take what you need, leave what you don't" fad? That reveal should have had much more of an impact than it did, but its predictability took away from it.

Even with the outcome of Clayton's final wish of having a beer, it was obvious that Luciana would eventually find one of Jim's beers that he put in the box.

Although, it did put a smile on my face when Luciana went the extra mile to chill it and give Clayton a cold beer.

It's extremely ironic that the supply box drops which Clayton started, actually ended up helping him in his time of need. It shows that these boxes continue to serve their purpose and help others, in one way or another.

Al seemed very interested in interviewing him, and I'm sure Clayton would have had some wild stories to tell. Unfortunately, she'll never get the opportunity.

Rest in peace, Clayton, AKA Polar Bear.

Although, with Luciana now being in possession of Clayton's journals, it will be the next best thing to having him tell his story. Hopefully, they will prove useful in some capacity, now that Luciana has rejoined the group.

I do wonder, however, who the individual is that Clayton wanted to see but hadn't spoken to in a while. That little nugget wasn't mentioned for no reason, and will no doubt be touched upon again.

What are the odds that he could have been referring to the Filthy Woman?

It would give her a motive in trying to prevent the supply box drops which Clayton had begun in the first place. Could they have been married? Maybe he wanted to help others against his wife's wishes and it put a rift in their relationship?

Beer Break - Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 13

Sure, I might be reaching, but it's definitely something to chew on. Perhaps those journals will shed some light on the subject.

The Filthy Woman is quickly proving that she is a force to be reckoned with. My question is: how does this woman know so much about Morgan? She even knew about Morgan's whole "losing people and losing himself" issues.

She's not someone we've ever met before, and Morgan certainly didn't recognize her when they met on Fear the walking dead season 4 episode 12. So how could she know about him? Could someone be feeding her information? At the moment she seems to be working alone, but things are never truly as they appear on this show.

And what is up with all of her talk about being "weak"? Who in their right mind would believe becoming a walker would make someone stronger?

Well, it's obvious that this woman is not in her right mind.

Marooned

John and Strand had their share of obstacles to overcome, as they attempted to find a way off of the island they had washed up on due to the storm.

Strand: I drink to forget.
John: Forget what?
Strand: That I don't have anyone to drink with anymore.

You could easily understand both John's eagerness to find a way out, and Strand's reluctance to do so and simply continue to waste away in Margaritaville. Strand is still reeling over the loss of his drinking buddy, Madison. While John at least has someone waiting for him to go back to.

Strand's quip about having given up on boating made me laugh, and was a great nod to the group's sea excursion aboard the Abigail back on Fear the Walking Dead Season 2.

While Strand initially had no interest in entertaining John's plan in escaping the island on his makeshift raft, a gliding monster lurking beneath the lake's surface had a plan of its own.

With the presence of a vicious and hungry alligator prowling the lake, John's idea of simply floating across was out of the question. The thing with John though, he's proven to be a determined and resourceful fellow.

Those wheels of his are always turning, and he has never been one to give up hope. John not only channeled his inner McGyver and utilized parts from the truck to build a new raft, but he was also able to convince Stand to leave with him.

Things seemed to be looking up for these two, but we knew something had to go wrong, right?

Using the horn to lure walkers into the lake to distract the alligator was brilliant, and it could have worked had the battery not crapped out.

The gator was just too much for the raft, causing John and Strand to abandon ship and sending them back from whence they came.

As fun as it was having the walkers get snatched up and vanish into the abyss, I wish we would have seen more of the gator. However, now that John and Strand are back to square one, there's sure to be more of this man vs. beast saga to come.

If you don't believe things get better, if we don't believe that we can make them that way, if we don't fight for every day, we're no different than the past.

John

That gator is an exciting new threat for this series, and it's going to be interesting to see how Strand and John overcome it. While John did eat the candy he had been saving for June, it doesn't mean he's given up hope. Deflated perhaps, but that hope remains intact.

Pit Stop - Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 13

Maybe Alicia and Charlie will come to their rescue? At the very least they were able to reach Morgan, thanks to Charlie radioing the channel on the box they found.

While Morgan's idea of leaving the open radio channel on the supply boxes seemed like a good idea at the time, he didn't count on the Filthy Woman using that channel to eavesdrop on their every move. And now the group is in a pickle, as she's caught up to them in Al's van.

They can't outrun the van, and they don't have the firepower to outmatch the guns. The only thing they probably can do is pray that the van runs out of gas again.

Whatever happens, I just hope none of that beer gets harmed during the attack. Now that would be a tragedy.

Left In The Dark - Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 13

"Blackjack" wasn't the greatest episode this season, but it was definitely a step up from the previous two yawn-fests. Hopefully, the rest of Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 can build on this episode's momentum as we head into the home stretch.

Now it's your turn Fear-natics!.

What did you think of "Blackjack"? Will Morgan and the group be able to fend off the Filthy Woman's attack? Will Strand and John ever get off that island?.
