How to Get Away with Murder Season 5 Episode 3 Review: The Baby Was Never Dead

So is this show really telling me there is another Winterbottom out there in the universe?

How to Get Away with Murder Season 5 Episode 3 left us with more than one cliffhanger, as we learned some surprising information about Bonnie and continued getting sneak peeks into the future.

Every season this show follows a pretty similar format, which you'd think could get repetitive and even stale over time. But no. This season feels fresh, exciting, intriguing and has the best flashforward teases since How To Get Away With Murder Season 2

Michaela Pratt - How to Get Away with Murder

That's a bold statement, but there is a fascinating factor this season that hasn't always been present every year. For starters, all the characters feel important and involved in the central mysteries.

Sometimes there feels like a disconnect with all the various storylines playing out but it feels very streamlined and less confusing right now. It doesn't hurt that for the most part; there's a lot less anger and animosity between everyone. Conflict between every single person on a series isn't always necessary to make a drama work.

Now, of course, this will all go downhill because it has to, but I'm enjoying everyone working together. Give me more Annalise and Tegan, Annalise and Oliver, hell even Annalise and Bonnie sharing scenes right now doesn't automatically equal a depressive, screaming match.

A lot of the goodwill can be attributed to Annalise, who is in a great place professionally. The Supreme Court case invigorated her soul and truly made her a better person, without diminishing her killer instinct.

And that instinct was on full display during the psychopath CEO trial.

Annalise and Emmett are still feeling one another out and them working together on this case can only help them in the long run. Emmett is running the show, and Annalise accepts her place, while still making her presence known.

Niles Harrington was the arrogant, one-dimensional defendant that Annalise has dealt with before, but he honestly differed from some of the past flashy one episode characters, as he was loud and brash but also a man ready to talk about love any chance he got.

His back and forth with Tegan and Annalise was equal parts offputting and fascinating. Also, I already mentioned enjoying Annalise and Tegan together, but it's worth mentioning again. If those two could get on the same page, they could be unstoppable.

The decision to have Niles' secretary try on the belt was bold and gave us this amazing How To Get Away With Murder quote:

Emmett: We have nothing.
Annalise: We don't have nothing.
Emmett: We have the belt.
Annalise: Let's OJ this.

Ultimately, Niles was his own undoing, and unless they would have shown Bethanny standing over Andrew's dead body with her hands on the belt, they were always finding Niles guilty. In this day and age, is the concept of innocent until proven guilty still the law of the land?

While Annalise was flexing her courtroom muscles, Nate was continuing to track Bonnie's child. Nate is going above and all the way beyond to piece Bonnie's past together and he seems to be getting closer and closer to the truth.

And the closer he gets to the truth, the more confusing it gets.

Looking On - How To Get Away With Murder Season 5 Episode 3

Bonnie having a sister would be official soap opera territory, but I'm going to see how this all plays out before passing serious judgment. It's a twist most people probably didn't see coming, and it just adds another layer to the Gabriel/Bonnie story.

Speaking of Gabriel, just like Nate and his obsessive need to get to the bottom of Bonnie's file, Frank can't stop himself from finding out everything he can about Gabriel. And of course, he's shady and giving Frank every reason to doubt him.

In this hour alone, Frank stumbled upon an ID with Gabriel's picture and saw him deliberately hiding things when Asher stopped by unexpectedly. Couple that with the 2018 flip phone and it's not at all surprising that Frank has made this his new project.

At this point, there's just no way that the narrative is going to lead us to Bonnie is Gabriel's long-lost mother and that's it. This show is too smart to give us such a predictable payoff. There is more going on here, and I'm looking forward to that just as much as learning more about the flashforwards.

Mother & Baby - How To Get Away With Murder Season 5 Episode 3

Speaking of which, I think the most head-scratching moment of the brief look into the future was Connor's face. Who beat up that beautiful face just before his wedding and how was he explaining that to all his guests?

This show is also reminding us every week how poor our favorite couple is, so Connor and Oliver are going to come upon money some way or another because that is a fancy wedding and two months away, they are nowhere close to being able to fund that reception.

If Oliver is alive, that is. And I believe he is. These early red herrings won't fool me! Not again!

There are too many questions and too few answers right now. But one thing is true and will always remain true; this show does a whodunnit mystery better than most.

Everything Else You Need To Know

  • Emmett had an incident in London, and if I know Annalise, she's going to find out just who she's working for sooner than later.
  • Michaela's need to get Tegan to like her again is a clear projection of her self-esteem issues, as she has slowly come to the realization that not only is she disliked, she cares that she's disliked.

Random pairings on the show always pay dividends and her drunk stairwell chat with Frank was a classic.
  • Unpopular or popular opinion? Bonnie and Miller's romance is a snoozefest.
  • So when are we going to get Bonnie and Gabriel in the same room?
  • My working theory that Miller is the bloodied body in the snow still stands. But with this new revelation, one has to wonder if the lady with the high hair and steely demeanor is the real Bonnie Winterbottom.

Another solid hour is in the books, as we get closer to unraveling another murder!

So fanatics, how did you like "The Baby Was Never Dead"? Were you surprised to learn Bonnie had a sister? What are your working theories about the flashforwards?
