Roseanne Barr Reacts to Being Killed Off on The Conners

at .

Despite claiming she would not be speaking about The Conners, Roseanne Barr took to Twitter Tuesday night in the aftermath of her character being killed off on the series premiere of the Roseanne spinoff.

"I AIN’T DEAD, BITCHES!!!!," she shared via Twitter, apparently referencing the show's decision to kill the character from an opioid overdose.

While that was a small statement to make, she followed it up by releasing a lengthy statement on Rabbi Shmuley Boteach's Facebook page about an hour later that further delved into her thoughts about being fired, and her exit storyline.

The statement maintained that "this was a choice the network did not have to make," and that "the cancellation of Roseanne is an opportunity squandered due in equal parts to fear, hubris, and refusal to forgive."

Barr has appeared on Rabbi Shmuley Boteach's podcast on multiple occasions since her firing from the ABC hit, so it was expected that she would release the statement via the podcast.

While we wish the very best for the cast and production crew of The Conners, all of whom are deeply dedicated to their craft and were Roseanne’s cherished colleagues, we regret that ABC chose to cancel Roseanne by killing off the Roseanne Conner character.

That it was done through an opioid overdose lent an unnecessary grim and morbid dimension to an otherwise happy family show.

This was a choice the network did not have to make.

Roseanne was the only show on television that directly addressed the deep divisions threatening the very fabric of our society.

Specifically, the show promoted the message that love and respect for one another’s personhood should transcend differences in background and ideological discord.

The show brought together characters of different political persuasions and ethnic backgrounds in one, unified family, a rarity in modern American entertainment.

Above all else, the show celebrated a strong, matriarchal woman in a leading role, something we need more of in our country.

Through humor and a universally relatable main character, the show represented a weekly teaching moment for our nation.

Yet it is often following an inexcusable — but not unforgivable — mistake that we can discover the most important lesson of all: Forgiveness.

After repeated and heartfelt apologies, the network was unwilling to look past a regrettable mistake, thereby denying the twin American values of both repentance and forgiveness.

In a hyper-partisan climate, people will sometimes make the mistake of speaking with words that do not truly reflect who they are. However, it is the power of forgiveness that defines our humanity.

Our society needs to heal on many levels.

What better way for healing than a shared moment, once a week, where we could have all enjoyed a compelling storyline featuring a witty character – a woman – who America connected with, not in spite of her flaws, but because of them.

The cancellation of Roseanne is an opportunity squandered due in equal parts to fear, hubris, and a refusal to forgive.

Roseanne Barr Attends Event

The way in which Roseanne was killed off was already foreshadowed by Barr herself, but fans likely tuned into The Conners Season 1 Episode 1 to find out what became of the former matriarch.

The highly anticipated premiere picked up weeks after the shocking death, and Dan (John Goodman) struggled to make sense of it.

He was under the impression she died of a heart attack and refused to sleep in the bed after it. By the close of the episode, and various hurdles, the family realized it was, indeed, an opioid overdose.

ABC swung the ax on Roseanne back in May following a racist tweet in which she took aim at Obama's former aide Valerie Jarrett, comparing her to an ape.

When Barr's cast members condemned her tweets on social media, she lashed out at some of them, before trying to apologize again.

But the damage was done, and ABC placed a series order for the Barr-less spinoff in June. It's unclear whether Barr will actually draw a line now and let the spinoff exist without commenting about it all the time, but time will tell.

Roseanne Quotes

Dan: Candyman's home babe.
Roseanne: Oh, my favorite, drugs! What happened to the rest of our candy?
Dan: Funny story. Our insurance don't cover what it use to so I got the drugs for twice the price.

Roseanne: Dan! Dan!
Dan: What? What happened?
Roseanne: I thought you were dead!
Dan: I'm sleeping! Why does everybody always think I'm dead?
Roseanne: You looked happy. I thought maybe you moved on.
