Titans Season 1 Episode 2 Review: Hawk and Dove

at .

Now that's how you follow a series premiere.

Titans Season 1 Episode 2 was an hour that raised the stakes, gave us some intriguing back stories, and introduced us to a whole host of new characters that are sure to keep the action flowing.

Hank and Dawn as Hawk and Dove were downright illuminating. I love the ride or die aspect to their relationship and the fact that they're trying to make the best of dangerous situations.

Lending a Hand - Titans

It turns out, fighting crime does not render you invincible. Hank's body is starting to fail him, but does anyone seriously think he's ready to say goodbye to his crimefighting ways?

The chances are that he gets a nice dose of adrenaline when he's keeping the streets safe, and who can blame him? If you have an ability, then why not utilize it?

It was obvious Dawn liked to keep the streets safe, but she was thinking of the bigger picture here. It only takes one thing to go wrong for one or both of them to wind up dead.

But I liked that Dawn was willing to give it all up in the name of having a healthy relationship without one of them perishing. I was blindsided by that deadly fight at the conclusion of the hour.

Hank and Dawn Are In Love - Titans Season 1 Episode 2

It would be a ballsy move to kill off Dawn after one installment, but those final scenes did not leave me with much hope that she's going to pull through.

Dawn: Hey.
Hank: I’m sorry.
Dawn: Don’t be sorry.
Hank: It’s just the stress.

If anything, this is going to further drive a wedge between Hank and Dick. Hank was already feeling resentment towards Dick for having a sexual history in the first place.

There's no telling what the scorned lover would do if Dawn died as a result of Dick showing up Rachel. It's genuinely shocking that I'm sitting here writing about possibly losing one of my favorite characters.

Say it ain't so!

Hawk and Dove on Titans

Another big surprise for me was that Dick turned to Alfred for a handout. That showed how desperate he was to get away from Rachel and continue on his path of self-loathing alone.

He was in an awkward position, but it was a bit out there for him to lie to Rachel about what his intentions were. At the top of "Hawk and Dove," Dick was the only one fighting Rachel's corner.

Hawk: You’re late, boy wonder.
Dove: You know he always likes to make a dramatic entrance.
Robin: True.
Hawk: I thought your boss said to stay away from us.
Robin: I didn’t tell him.
Hawk: So, what is this? A night out with the bad kids?

We still don't know the ins and outs of why Dick likes to fight alone, and exist in the world as a single person, well away from everyone else.

The big kicker was when Hank reacted negatively to just how violent Dick had become when fighting the villains. The violence was the biggest shocker for me on Titans Season 1 Episode 1, and it helped set this series apart from the other DC TV properties.

There has to be a reason why Dick turned out this way, and I'm so on board to find out everything there is to know about him. I do hope, however, that if Dawn pulls through, we're not in for a love triangle.

Robin Looks Annoyed - Titans

Titans is in a league of its own when it comes to superhero TV shows, and I would prefer if it didn't get bogged down by some relationship drama.

The Nuclear family was reimagined, and while we don't know if they're robots, they're a deadly bunch. They're deadly assassins who have a swear jar.

Nuclear Dad: Hold your fucking horses.
Nuclear Mom: Honey, language.
Nuclear Dad: Sorry kids.

That's got to be the funniest parts of their storyline. Showing up at Amy's apartment was quite the surprise, but it's not like she knew everything there was to know about where Robin was headed.

Thus far, Amy is the least fleshed out character, and probably the most expendable. Beyond her investigation into what happened to the man Rachel laid waste to, she doesn't have much of a storyline.

Robin isn't going to change focus, and all of a sudden decide he doesn't want to work alone, so there's that. We also don't know much about who was sending the Nuclear family in pursuit of Rachel.

Anna Diop as Starfire aka Kori Anders - Titans

Were they hired by Kory pre-memory wipe? That's probably the most straightforward conclusion to come to in all of this. There was a lack of Starfire on "Hawk and Dove," and that will hopefully be rectified on Titans Season 1 Episode 3.

Logan aka Beast Boy has only had one scene so far. I get the need to make the Titans a team is a slow burn, but it would be good to check in with some of the other characters who will be sharing the screen with the heroes down the line.

That's all I got, Titans Fanatics!

What are your thoughts on the way Hawk and Dove's storyline was handled? Could Dawn or Amy be dead?
