If you're one of the many people still watching Grey's Anatomy, you'll be well aware of the new 'Ship that set sail during Grey's Anatomy Season 15.

Yes, we're talking about Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti).

The pairing has not exactly gone down well with fans, and it's likely because it came out of nowhere.

Pompeo and Gianniotti, however, are on board with the pairing and have opened up about their thoughts on the reaction.

Giacomo is someone who we know, love, and adore – and he's so handsome! – and it's time for him to step up," Pompeo said to The Hollywood Reporter.

"He is an incredible actor and he has such a nice presence, and I'm really looking forward to building up his character more and letting him have his moment, because I really think he deserves it."

Gianniotti added: "I get a lot of people asking if I feel like I'm filling Derek's shoes or in his shadow, and I can't say I feel any of that.

"The biggest thing that Ellen and I have fought for most is that this romance and the unfolding of it be as different by design, so the audience doesn't feel like they're reliving someone else going through the same falling in love steps."

Pompeo went on to discuss the age difference between Meredith and DeLuca and had the perfect response to the naysayers.

"There's still plenty of older guys that are with much younger women, and no-one says anything," Pompeo said.

"But hopefully, we're past people saying that about an older woman with a younger man.

"Hopefully people don't even clock that because men have been doing it forever and continue to do it and no-one bats an eye."

Gianniotti added: "The age difference between Meredith and Andrew is something that we're trying not to talk about, because we've been preaching that love is love – and that includes age."

The pair do bring up some great points.

Grey's Anatomy Season 15 has been filled with relationship drama. Couples have been making up, breaking up and everything in between every other episode.

But the show has always been like that, and it's the soapy goodness that likely keeps fans tuning in.
