Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 19 Review: Pupuhi ka he'e o kai uli (The Octopus of the Deep Spews its Ink)

Sometimes it's acceptable to minimize the character development in an episode.

Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 19 largely focuses on a couple of enjoyable oddball cases.

Still, Junior continued to try to get through the wall that his father Natano has built up around himself following the death of Junior's sister Maya.

It was poignant to see how discovering his daughter's lost charm bracelet affected Natano and how he and Junior communicated in a series of grunts and nods.

Guys, amirite?

Ever since Junior enlisted in the Navy, a decision Natano opposed, there had been a tension between the pair.

The never-ending deck project has been the chance for them to reconnect. For example, this time Junior learned that Natano had joined the chorus just to connect with Junior's music-loving mother.

I was glad Junior identified the tape as show music because I couldn't recognize it.

But Junior got called away on a case before he could properly assess the emotional impact of the bracelet on his father, who has always been his rock, despite their differences.

Tani tried to help Junior with his concerns but he was just as closemouthed as his father, so she didn't get very far in helping him.

It was touching to watch Junior put Natano to bed after his heartbroken, inebriated father recalled when he first gave the bracelet to Maya.

I'd like to think their embrace was a breakthrough moment for them, but they don't exactly put their feelings into words. We'll see.

Both of the cases to be solved were likable, delving into obscure topics, art and aloha shirts, two very different subjects.

Art meant that Gerard Hirsch was back for the first time since Hawaii Five-0 Season 8 Episode 24, which made me very happy.

I always liked Willie Garson as conman Mozzie on White Collar, and former forger Hirsch is another variation of that character.

Surprisingly Tani called in Hirsch, likely because she hadn't been exposed to him as much as her longer-tenured teammates had.

He promptly transferred his longtime infatuation with Kono to Tani but she shot him down quickly.

But she did recognize his value as he was able to identify the dead graffiti artist, which gave the case direction it had been missing.

And that had to be the first time any law-enforcement team has tripped a paint-gun boobytrap.

Hirsch gave the squad perspective on the art world that none of them had and even forged a realistic "undiscovered" Briks mural to bring out those who will disfigure his art.

The former forger opened up to Tani and managed to improve her opinion of him.

She even got him an opportunity to run Briks' planned foundation to assist dissident artists, making better use of his art knowledge than his crime-scene cleanup gig.

Then he spoiled it by trying to hit on her. But Tani don't play that game.

Often-neglected Jerry was well utilized in this episode.

It was cool using a drone to map the rooftop crime scene and the extrapolation that he and Tani did accomplish in minutes what would have taken hours for a forensics team.

Also, he skillfully manufactured fingerprints to crack the security on Briks' computer. That helped turn the direction of the investigation.

But is it Art? - Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 19

It had seemed pretty cut and dried, with the dying Briks' agent trying to drive up the prices of his earlier works by having his new works defaced.

But since the agent was found tortured and dead, the team soon deduced that Briks' accomplice Teresa, thought to be a terrorist, was actually the target, since she was a dissident targeting a corrupt Nicaraguan official who had her son killed.

Hirsch's knowledge of local artists even helped FIve-0 to locate where Teresa was being held before she confessed, wrapping up that case.

Undercover Buyer - Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 19

The Case of the Missing Aloha Shirt was less developed, but it gave Grover and Adam something separate to do.

Yup, we got to learn about Bailey's Antiques and Aloha Shirts, which looked like a really fun place to visit.

So that's where Grover gets his, shall we say, forgiving wardrobe. Watching him as a special shirt buyer was hilarious.

Adam got to job shadow Grover this time out since he still hasn't effectively been fit into the task force.

Maybe next season, when Ian Anthony Dale is available full time, Adam will be better integrated. Let's hope.

Maybe Grover can teach him how to deliver one-liners in the line of duty. That seems to be a required skill for a Five-0 member.

Killing a man for his antique shirt seemed a little harsh. So, of course, there was more to it.

The dead man first was rolled for his winnings from an illegal poker game. Then he lost his shirt, again.

A quick chat with that game's dealer with the game's dealer revealed that many people would want the man dead.

But he had only tipped off the man's ex-wife, so it was a simple case to solve at that point.
