Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 22 Review: O ke kumu, o ka mana, ho'opuka 'ia (The teacher, the pupil--let it come forth)

Noelani finally got her turn in the spotlight, and it didn't even happen on Magnum P.I.

Yes, Five-0's favorite medical examiner seemed to get more time on Peter Lenkov's other Hawaiian show than her own, for some reason.

Probably because that series has fewer characters among whom to split up the airtime.

But Noelani did receive more than half of Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 22. And it's about time.

Surgery at Gunpoint -- Tall - Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 22

Noelani has never gotten the opportunity to establish her personality as much as her M.E. predecessor Max did, the chance to let her freak flag fly.

Who is Noelani and what does she like to do on her downtime?

Other than her dressing up as Velma for Halloween on Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 5, we have learned little about her.

It could be worse. She could get forgotten like Eric. Is he still on Oahu?

Anyway, Noelani's personal life remained largely a mystery after this episode.

Under Pressure - Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 22

However, we did finally learn why she became a coroner, and that in turn gave viewers some sympathy for Noelani's mentor, Dr. Chu, who had fallen on hard times, becoming a surgeon for criminals who had nowhere else to go for treatment.

Chu did a whole lot of rationalizing about her situation.

It did make perfect sense that hospital executives would dump the blame on her during a malpractice suit, to the point where she became unemployable.

Couldn't she have just transitioned into academia or research to make a living? But I suppose those don't offer the same thrill of surgery that being a mob doctor does.

But why did she have to drag her talented former protege, Noelani, into this mess?

Sure, Noelani does have access to body parts which aren't easy to come by. But Noelani left behind surgery for a reason, on which she finally elaborated.

A Hard Ending - Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 22

Even after she got abducted, Noelani was still fighting to escape, taking out one thug and holding a gun on the other.

She might have gotten there too, if she hadn't come back to rescue Chu, who in turn betrayed her.

Chu was right that Noelani still had the goods, as she managed to save the criminal on the table from complications of heart surgery all by herself.

Well, she was able to execute Chu's step-by-step instructions anyway. Any surgery that ends well, right?

Noelani even was crafty enough to leave behind a clue that eventually led to her rescue.

Wedding Disaster - Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 22

How her mentor's name led to McGarrett and Junior storming the warehouse operating room, I wasn't sure. Maybe Chu advertised on Craig's List? I missed something there.

Afterward, Noelani explained that she left surgery behind because she didn't want to have to wall herself off from her emotions, as she had witnessed Chu doing.

Chu was understanding and helped Noelani onto her new path as a medical examiner, but Noelani wasn't able to help her in her time of need.

It was a touching scene when Steve consoled Noelani at the end, explaining how it wasn't always possible to save loved ones from their own bad decisions.

Adam's past reached out and grabbed him as well.

Old Friends - Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 22

His old friend Tamiko found herself trapped by familial obligation, something to which Adam could certainly relate.

She had found someone who made her happier within that box.

Unfortunately, her candidate for Yakuza Husband No. 2 was an undercover FBI agent, who, not surprisingly, had gone missing on their wedding day.

Tamiko's Yakuza boss dad, the obvious candidate, wasn't behind the disappearance. But when the agent's body was found, it sure looked like a mob hit, regardless of the father's denials.

It was an enjoyable twist having the problem being an undercover agent who got in too deep.

Not only was Kevin about to marry into a Yakuza family, but also he was sending money to the pregnant wife of a man he sent away.

He just never learned to shut off his undercover connections, and that led to him getting killed.

Stalking a Killer - Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 22

I don't think that Masuda was right about Adam eventually coming back to the dark side. He made it out and even changed sides, working for Five-0 now.

But seeing how comfortable Adam and Tamiko were around each other, I had to wonder.

He's unencumbered, has left his Yakuza life behind and is ready to move ahead. She's been cast adrift and desperately wants to get out from under her father's shadow.

Might they possibly become an item? Tamiko is listed as a recurring character, which means she will be back.

Now that Adam has his own place, a new relationship would be the next logical step. Are we really to believe that someone as pretty as Adam will be unattached for long?

Thoughtful Present - Hawaii Five-0 Season 9 Episode 22

Yes, I know Steve is single as well. But he's still pining for Catherine and is tangled up in his work and being a father figure for Tani and Junior. Who was time for dating?

I don't see Junior and Tani staying just friends for much longer.

She did an awfully nice thing for him, cleaning up the photo of his father and sister and framing it.

Too bad Junior didn't feel safe in giving it to him since the drunk driver who killed Maya is up for parole. Junior can't catch a break.

The downside of Junior and Tani becoming a couple is that they'll need a cutesy nickname? Jani? Tunior? Ick.

It's the stretch run, so to catch up, watch Hawaii Five-0 online.

Did you enjoy learning more about Noelani?

Should Adam entertain a relationship with Tamiko?

Who will make the first move: Junior or Tani?
