The Hot Zone Sequel Officially in the Works at Nat Geo

The Hot Zone is just too hot for National Geographic to give up. 

Deadline is reporting that the cabler has already begun discussions with producer Fox 21 TV Studios to bring the series back for additional seasons.

But if you're hoping it will be a continuation of The Hot Zone Season 1, we have some bad news. 

The series would become an anthology, with a new health-related crisis every season. The Hot Zone Season 1 benefited from a self-contained story.

It also allows actors who would normally not commit to TV projects to make their way to the small screen.

While details are scarce, the outlet does tease that the basis of the sophomore run could be the post-9/11 anthrax crisis. 

The cast of the opening installment included Julianna Margulies, Noah Emmerich, Liam Cunningham, and Topher Grace.

The news to bring the series back is hardly a surprise. The Hot Zone launched in late May, and struck a chord with viewers, quickly becoming Nat Geo's most-watched scripted series ever.

It secured 9.33 million viewers per episode including premieres and repeates in Live + 7 ratings, proving that a lot of people were watching it, just not live. 

The series also garnered an approval rating of 85 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Hot Zone is based on the eponymous international best-seller by Richard Preston.

It recounts the terrifying true story of the origins of the Ebola virus, a highly infectious deadly virus from the central African rain forest, and its first arrival on U.S. soil.
