9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 1 Review: Kids Today

There is truly nothing like 9-1-1.

Sure, countless dramas deal with obscure medical situations and daring rescues, but since its premiere, 9-1-1 has done an incredible job of raising the stakes as high as they can go.

And 9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 1 was no exception.

Manhattan Place Call - 9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 1

Right off the bat, we're met with a teenager behind the wheel of a vintage car speeding down the highway, unable to slow down.

Not even a minute into the season premiere and we are on the roller coaster.

It was nice to see the whole team together and devising a plan to get the kid to safety. It's not always realistic that the entire ensemble would work together on a call, but it's always enjoyable when they do.

We got the added bonus during this scene of seeing the shock on Hen's face when she found out Athena and Bobby got married.

Hen: What kind of crazy person came up with this plan?
Bobby: My wife.

Months have passed since the events of 9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 18, and apparently, Bobby and Athena decided that they didn't need to tell everyone that they were married.

A Laugh Over Wine - 9-1-1- Season 3 Episode 1

Michael very clearly feels some type of way about not being invited to the wedding, and while it's understandable why he wasn't invited, it's hard not to feel bad for him.

Seeing the photo of his family with Bobby has to sting a little bit. Is Michael happy for them? Of course, he is.

But at the same time, it's an adjustment to have your kids suddenly be a part of a family that he isn't a part of. There isn't much time to explore this situation this week, but you have to imagine this will be brought up in the future.

Happy Together - 9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 1

Michael was only in a few scenes, and he mentioned not being invited to the wedding twice! Poor guy.

Buck went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows within a matter of hours.

He was so relieved to have passed his tests, and then within the blink of an eye he was back in the hospital.

The scene of him standing in front of the party coughing up blood was jarring.

Knowing Buck, you know he fought back with everything he could to get back to the station, but his body was failing him.

Of all the characters we've met on 9-1-1, Buck's arc has been the most well-developed. He's really grown up over the course of two seasons, and he's found the one thing he feels like he was meant to do.

He was meant to protect people. And if he's unable to do that, he doesn't know what his purpose in life is.

As compassionate as the people at Station 118 can be, they were a little cavalier about Buck's predicament.

Athena & Hen Chat - 9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 1

They've all been through the wringer in more ways than one, but not understanding why Buck would need time to decompress seemed out of character for everyone.

This notion that he should just bush it off and move on isn't always realistic. It's okay to feel lost sometimes.

Buck did need a kick in the pants from Eddie, but he didn't need all the judgment.

Buck In The Hospital - 9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 1

The friendship Buck has made with Christopher is absolutely precious. But we only get a few minutes of their adorableness before the next big threat comes rolling in.

The rescue of the week goes to Athena and Maddie, who team up to save a woman and her newborn from the most heinous crime imaginable.

Both Maddie and Athena's ability to think quickly on their feet is what makes them both such amazing first responders. They're skilled and intelligent, but they're also intuitive and they follow those instincts.

It can't be easy to know that every decision you make can affect whether or not someone lives or dies. But first responders do it every single day, and often put their lives on the line in the process.

Athena On Duty - 9-1-1 Season 3 Episode 1

Things are moving at a pretty brisk pace already, but boy is good to be back in the capable hands of 9-1-1.

Loose Ends

  • Ali! No! We were all rooting for Buck to get his happy ending in the love department. Although, I'm completely okay with the Buck and Eddie bromance for the time being.
  • Chimney and Maddie are full-on in love and it's beautiful to see. They're both in a good place and it's good to see them smiling and talking about the future.
  • The STD breakout at the retirement home was absurd and just the right amount of humor this heavy hour needed.

We're back in business, guys!

How excited are all you guys to have this show back on TV?

What's next for Buck?

Is Michael right to be upset he wasn't invited to Bobby and Athena's wedding?

Are you rooting for Chimney and Maddie?
