Grease: Rydell High Spinoff Series Ordered at HBO Max

Grease is the word at HBO Max.
The forthcoming streamer has handed out a series order to a live-action TV spinoff based on the 1978 John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John movie.
What's more, HBO Max is betting on the Grease brand alone, making it a hit, opting to pull the trigger on a straight-to-series order as opposed to the traditional pilot.
The series will be produced by Paramount Television, the same team that worked Fox's Emmy-winning Grease: Live.
Plot details are scarce, but we do know it will reimagine the original movie and will feature some of the same characters.
But casting details have yet to be revealed, and given that a writer has yet to be attached to the project, it may be some time before it actually sees the light of day.

"Grease is an iconic pop-culture phenomenon that works for every generation, and I’m thrilled that our friends at Paramount were excited about the idea of opening up the show and putting it on a larger canvas for a weekly series,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of content at HBO Max.
“This is high school and life in small-town USA told on the scale of a big rock ’n’ roll musical. It’s Grease 2.0 but with the same spirit, energy and excitement you immediately think of when you hear any of these iconic songs. You’re the One That I Want!”
The aforementioned live iteration aired in 2016 on FOX and featured a cast that included Julianne Hough, Aaron Tveit, and Vanessa Hudgens. It took home five Emmy awards.
“Grease is one of the most beloved Paramount titles, and it’s a thrill to be reimagining it for today’s audience with our good friends at Temple Hill and Picturestart," Paramount TV president Nicole Clemens said.
