How to Get Away with Murder Season 6 Episode 4 Review: I Hate the World

at .  Updated at .

This felt like a filler episode in every sense of the word.

That doesn't mean How to Get Away with Murder Season 6 Episode 4 was bad, but it weaker than the first set of episodes that kicked off this final season.

A lot of time was spent on the case of the week and Michaela's plight, which, while interesting, didn't offer much insight into the season's overarching theme.

Oliver Reflects - How To Get Away With Murder Season 6 Episode 4

Michaela is one of the strongest characters in the series, but waiting until now to truly dive into this storyline with her father seems like a curious choice this late in the game.

Solomon comes across pretty likable, if not a bit predictable. He had the women, and even Gabriel, eating out of the palm of his hand as he talked about wanting to invest in woman entrepreneurs.

Michaela was naturally less impressed, and it caused a big difference in opinion between Michaela and her pseudo-beau.

It forever feels like two steps forward, three steps back with Gabriel and Michaela. And there's never been enough stability to get behind them as a rootable couple.

But Gabriel wasn't wrong about Michaela's unwillingness to listen to others.

Begging For Answers - How To Get Away With Murder Season 6 Episode 4

She has always struggled with criticism, and with the notion that her ideas and opinions aren't always right.

It works well for her times, as she oozes confidence in the same way that Annalise does when she commands a courtroom. Or even when she commands a conversation.

However, it doesn't work in a relationship.

Getting caught by Solomon will most likely see Michaela turning a corner, as they both seem intrigued by one another. But the only way this storyline gets worthwhile is if it finds a way to merge into the bigger picture.

Having Michaela off on her own and away from the group doesn't seem like the greatest strategy. This show works best when everyone is involved in a central problem and playing off one another.

The Caplan and Gold case of the week involved a disabled man who was hellbent on getting a shady dating app creator to change her algorithm. And it continued the show's tradition of exploring cases that are extremely relevant to today's society.

Dating apps are one of the most lucrative creations of the last century, as more and more people have flocked to these sites, finding it to be one of the only ways they can find suitable matches.

For Carl, he'd used the site to find love, but instead, he found himself discriminated as the algorithm didn't allow him to find matches outside of other disabled women.

Annalise's morality was once again at odds with doing what was best for her client, especially once she found out why Heidi was so keen to hold onto that algorithm.

And Carl ended up being kind of terrible, but he and Annalise shared a great woman that highlighted how much Annalise understood Carl. They really weren't so different.

I know you're looking for a woman to love. Why don't you start loving yourself?

Annalise [to Carl]

Annalise should practice what she preaches.

This season began with Annalise's hesitancy to forgive herself both for the wrongs she's committed and the perceived wrongs that have been placed on her from her family, her students, and society.

But she took a step forward when she agreed to a date with Robert.

You can't help but be skeptical of all new people on How To Get Away With Murder. And we've been down this road before with both Jimmy Smits and Timothy Hutton's characters finding themselves attracted to Annalise, with both of their arcs ending horribly.

It felt different with Robert, though. He seemed genuine and a little awkward with her. Plus, he wasn't her therapist or her boss, so we're already a step above everyone else!

It feels silly to get excited over Annalise's love life when we're being led to believe she's going to die soon, but doesn't she deserve a little happiness at this point?

Sheer Panic - How To Get Away With Murder Season 6 Episode 4

Every time we got to hear a snippet of Annalise's conversations with Sam, it just brought you back to all the pain she endured over the years.

And no one is here for this rewrite Gabriel and his mother are trying to push about Sam.

Annalise and Sam's relationship was a lot deeper than anything Gabriel is ever going to hear on those tapes. He's hearing the words but he can never know what it was like to be in that room with them.

The Pressure Continues to Mount - How to Get Away with Murder

Gabriel wants so badly to believe that Sam was the man Vivian believed he was, but newsflash he wasn't. And he appears to be back to thinking Annalise is the devil, which is exactly what I feared.

If he teams up with Vivian, things could get very bad for Annalise and her students real quick.

Everything Else You Need To Know

  • Frank can't die before he tells everyone what he knows about Laurel. Right?
  • Bonnie and Frank have never made much sense, but if Frank does die, that would be the second truly devastating death Bonnie had to endure in a short amount of time. I don't think she would be able to come back from it.
  • Oliver is losing it. But he and Connor got to stop stressing for a few minutes and do something fun. So good for them.

  • Asher's sister catfishing him and then showing up on his doorstep was odd. Couldn't she have just shown up?
  • There was zero movement during the flashforward. Boo!
  • Tegan can be a bit unlikeable at times, but it feels like Nate is barking up the wrong tree by trying to bring her down.
  • Sam Keating is still the worst in case you forgot.

This wasn't exactly the most thrilling installment and I'm curious to see what you guys thought about it!

Will Frank survive?

Do you trust Robert?

What's next for Michaela and Solomon?

How to Get Away with Murder Season 6 Episode 4 Quotes

Nate: Uh, question, when did this clinic stop being about helping the underprivileged?
Annalise: You mean when Tegan drove to Maryland to stop your dumbass from getting our clients deported?

Agent Lanford: You have to want something better for yourself than whatever it is you do these days.
Nate: I want my pop's case solved. That's what I want.
Agent Lanford: So do we. Just give us something on Annalise. And, hell, there might even be a job for you here. Special Agent Lahey. It sounds good, right?
