Supergirl Season 5 Episode 8 Review: The Wrath of Rama Khan

Team Kara or Team Alex?

On the show's fall finale, Supergirl Season 5 Episode 8, the Danvers sisters were on opposing sides concerning the infamous debate of Lena's villain status.

As we saw our heroes struggle with Lena's betrayal, there was also the problem of Rama Khan's disdain for the human race and, of course, the upcoming threat of the Crisis that has been sorely missed on Supergirl.

Kara Danvers - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 8

Alex was the voice of reason as Kara desperately wanted to believe in Lena's goodness.

It is the classic head versus heart debate that has plagued TV characters for years. Yet, it makes for great television.

You have every reason to fear my brother. I can't promise you that Malefic has changed for good. People make mistakes and they do terrible things. We have to let them do better, bring them back into the light. Otherwise, what's the point in trying to save everyone?

The contrasting viewpoints gave the viewers some much-needed clarity on both sides of the "is Lena a villain?" debacle.

While Kara has always been known to lead with her heart, Alex values critical thinking. Neither of them is wrong per se, but both of them are needed to balance out the other and to come to the right conclusion.

AI - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 8

We still do not have the answer to the question concerning Lena's dark turn. However, it was rather informative to see Alex automatically jump to the conclusion that Lena might just be a Luthor after all.

So far, on Supergirl Season 5, we have only seen Lena constantly insist that she is not a villain. That is, until she revealed her betrayal to Kara and, in turn, Kara told the rest of her team.

Now we get to see the two sides of interpreting Lena's actions unfold onscreen instead of debating them with fellow Supergirl fanatics.

With the extra information, we can begin to dissect Lena's true intentions and what the future holds for her.

Lena Luthor - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 8

Kara believes that Lena can be saved, and Alex agrees with her. But the fact of the matter is that Alex was right to worry about Lena.

Lena acts as if she is the only one who has ever been hurt and lied to when she has hurt and lied to Kara in the past. And Kara was not lying to Lena out of malice; it was out of love.

Kara: You spent years trying to be open and trusting. Even when everyone expected you to be like your family. Even when everyone in your life let you down. Even when I was weak and lied to you knowing that all you ever asked for was the truth. You were always better. Lex took advantage of my weakness and used it to manipulate you. He wanted my mistakes to change you. He wanted you to become him. But, you are nothing like him. Nothing. Don't let my mistakes turn you into something you're not.
Lena: I am good. And I always was. Lex didn't change me and you didn't change me either. You just exposed me to the ugliness of humanity. You did me a favor Kara. I learned what kind of deceitful person you really are and that's what inspired me to do this.

But Lena cannot see the capacity of Kara's love and friendship. Lena is blinded by her rage that she fails to realize that she is human too and humans are capable of mistakes.

Alex automatically understood that Lena truly thought she was doing good, but she did not have the luxury of time to try to get through to her. Alex acted with her head before her heart, and she did the best she could with the cards she was dealt.

Alex fought for the city she serves before she fought for her friend.

Kara & J'onn - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 8

On the other hand, Kara automatically acted with her heart. She was blinded by her love for Lena that she failed to see that Lena was an imminent threat.

One of the best things about Kara is her heart but, unfortunately, sometimes it just isn't enough.

At first, Kara and Alex refused to see the other's point of view. Later on, as time was running out, they realized that they could meet in the middle.

Alex: Your choice to conceal your identity wasn't born out of a place of maliciousness. It was born out of love and compassion. You were just trying to protect your family and you were trying to protect Lena from people who could use that information to hurt us. And look, I love Lena too. I am deeply upset by what's going on. But, this isn't just two friends who are in a fight, this is someone who has turned a corner.
Kara: No, this is not her, this is not our Lena.
Alex: Well who is our Lena? I mean, she knew that Lex was out of prison and she said nothing. She kept Sam Arias locked in a sub-basement at L Corp knowing that she was Reign and she said nothing. She knows how to make kryptonite and she kept that hidden from us. Lena is leading her own double life.
Kara: You are making her sound like a Luthor.
Alex: Maybe that's because she is one. We can't put our faith in some distant hope that she is going to do the right thing. And, when every single action that she has taken up until now points to the contrary. Okay, we have to stop her Kara. The safety of the world depends on that.
Kara: She is not Lex. I will not treat her like a villain.
Alex: I know you won't. That's why I have to.

If Kara could be a little bit more like Alex and if Alex could be a little bit more like Kara, they could find a solution that would result in saving the world and in not harming Lena. And, thankfully, they did.

Now they need to figure out how to save Lena's soul like J'onn saved Malefic's. But it will probably not come as easily as Malefic's redemption.

Andrea Stands Tall - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 8

Who would ever think that there would be tears shed for Andrea Rojas?

As the expected villain of Supergirl Season 5, Andrea was cruel and reckless with her takeover of CatCo. But somewhere along the way, she started to gather sympathy.

Plus, Andrea pretty much redeemed herself when she tried to warn the DEO of Rama Khan's plans to wipe out the human race.

Now that she has gotten her revenge on the people that killed her lover and put her through hell the past few years, where does she go? Does she become a superfriend? Whatever it is, her part on Supergirl will be welcomed with open arms.

Rama Khan - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 8

Hopefully, we will get to see Andrea help Supergirl take down the rest of Leviathan as there is a new person in charge -- Gamemnae.

We learned a little bit more about Leviathan in that we learned that there is an Elder behind the organization and she is most likely up to no good.

When Supergirl returns, we are sure to see Leviathan take its place as the main villain alongside a questionably evil Lena.

But, for now, Supergirl has a bigger problem.

Kara's Concern - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 8

Ladies and gentlemen, we are finally in Crisis mode.

In a shocking turn of events, The Monitor showed up to tell J'onn that he is the one who released his brother from the Phantom Zone -- an event shown way back on Supergirl Season 4 Episode 22.

The Monitor: When I saw you fight in Elseworlds, I could see that you were a great warrior. But, one plagued by his past, and that made you vulnerable. You believed it was because you left Mars, but it was something far, far greater J'onn -- your brother. But, now that you have faced those demons, you have come to learn your vulnerabilities are your strengths. And now you are ready.
J'onn: Ready for what?
The Monitor: A crisis.

The Monitor put J'onn through so much pain and misery just because he thought that he was a noble warrior and he needed to test J'onn for the upcoming Crisis.

Well, to be honest, it should not be too shocking as pain and misery tend to follow wherever The Monitor goes.

J'onn - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 8

However, the reveal that Lex Luthor is alive and has been awaiting The Monitor's call for the Crisis produced a much louder gasp.

It is surprising, to say the least, that The Monitor trusts Lex enough to want him fighting on the heroes side when he is a murderer and has been to known to play the villain.

No one will ever know what is going on inside The Monitor's mind, but what we do know for sure is that Kara is not going to be happy when she sees Lex.

At least we got a whole lot of teases for the highly anticipated crossover on the show that has seemingly forgotten that they were going to be involved in the Crisis.

What did you think Supergirl Fanatics?

Were you on Kara or Alex's side? How badly do you want Andrea to become a superfriend? And, where the heck did Nash Wells go?
