Superstore Season 5 Episode 10 Review: Negotiations

at .  Updated at .

Superstore has left viewers with another cliffhanger just in time for the holidays!

Merry Christmas from Cloud 9, right? Not exactly.

The good news is that Superstore Season 5 Episode 10 was a must-watch episode and an incredible installment to show. However, the employees are about to get hit with a surprise that's not in the spirit of the season.

Amy - Superstore Season 5 Episode 10

The Christmas episode of Superstore pushed the plot forward immensely, and it is impossible to convey how thankful I was for it.

As someone who was beginning to lose hope in the show's mediocre fifth season, the midseason finale left me excited in a way I haven't been since Superstore Season 5 Episode 1

The episode wasn't the funniest one, by any means, but it was still able to stay light and elicit a few laughs while dealing with a more serious matter.

Christmas in Cloud 9 - Superstore Season 5 Episode 10

Jonah's confidence was unmatched during his discussion with corporate. Who needs a lawyer when you have Jonah Simms?

We don't get to relax! That's kinda the point. No, we got to work mopping up scum in your stores. And ruining our knees lifting boxes. And after all of that, we still can't afford rent. Or to go to a doctor when we're sick. Or to buy a car instead of taking five different buses to work.

Jonah

He was undoubtedly the MVP of the episode, and he deserves a round of applause. We can't leave Sandra out either, but it seemed as her presence at the meeting was more for comedic effect than anything else.

Although, her comment about the buses did help back Jonah up while simultaneously driving the point home. You go, girl.

For twenty whole minutes, everything felt right in the world.

Jonah and Sandra succeeded, the employees were throwing a Christmas party, and Amy and Jonah were finally the couple the series claimed they were since Superstore Season 4.

Rather than begrudging co-workers who occasionally tolerate each other's company, Amy and Jonah were undeniably two characters in love.

That's all viewers have ever asked for.

Christmas Kisses - Tall - Superstore Season 5 Episode 10

Amy's belief in Jonah, despite the seeds of doubt Dina planted in her mind, has come a long way since Superstore Season 1.

Jonah: Honestly, I am still a little in shock. You must be too. You were convinced I was gonna blow it this morning.
Amy: No, I wasn't!
Jonah: Yeah! "Call me when you lose! K, bye!"
Amy: That is not what I said! I maybe thought it just a little bit because we always lose. Because corporate sucks. And everybody always sucks. Well, almost everybody. Not you. You did it.

It may have been years ago, but Amy used to think Jonah was incapable of getting things done. After this episode it's hard to believe, but these characters truly did start out hating each other.

Well, one of them did anyway.

They don't call it the "enemies to lovers" trope for nothing.

A Simmosa Christmas - Tall - Superstore Season 5 Episode 10

It may have appeared to be a minuscule moment, but the quick "I love you," Jonah said to Amy over the phone is more proof of how far their relationship has come.

Jonah: You're right. We can do this.
Amy: Yes! Yes, you can! You are smart! You got this!
Jonah: I love you. Thank you. Gotta go, bye.

The only time viewers have heard these two profess their love for each other in a serious way was during a screaming match on Superstore Season 4 Episode 13.

The couple hasn't even shared a kiss for a season and a half, but all that changed with, "Negotiations."

Amy is a character who always needs to be in control, and her ability to relinquish it and trust Jonah with something so important to both of them says a lot about where their relationship is going.

Simmosa is in it for the long haul.

It even feels reasonable to assume that Jonah and Amy are getting engaged by the Season 5 finale. Their relationship has to go somewhere this season, and if it's not backward, there's only one other option.

As blissful as those twenty minutes were, viewers should have known it wouldn't last.

Maya's phone call to Amy reporting that Cloud 9 had been bought and the union negotiations were irrelevant, was a like a cold bucket of water being dumped on both Amy and the audience.

Amy: So what does this mean for the company?
Maya: Big picture? Who knows. They tell me nothing. But for now, I just wanted to let you know, no more union!

To make things worse, Jonah was so excited about what they had accomplished, that Amy couldn't bear to take away from his happiness.

Sayid and Marcus - Superstore Season 5 Episode 10

Is Amy going to tell the workers the truth? Or is she going to keep them blissfully unaware for as long as possible?

Hopefully, there wont' be a huge time jump when Superstore returns in January, and the show will pick up directly after the holidays.

With Christmas and New Years over, it seems unlikely that the next episode will still take place during the holiday season.

Where does this leave the union? Will the new ownership affect Amy's management position?

There's far too many things that could go wrong.

Stray Thoughts:

  • The scenes between Amy, Dina, and Cheyenne were much needed. The ladies of Cloud 9 have a special bond that viewers haven't seen too often during Superstore Season 5. Those women can chop down a tree like it's nobody's business.
  • Amy should knock the power out in Cloud 9 more often. Those ice cream cocktails are essential for any party.
  • Was there anyone else who didn't care much about the Mateo and Glenn storyline? It passed the time, but there was so much pressure on the union it was hard to focus on anything else.
  • Jonah wanting to keep his candy cane as a momentum is precious. We don't blame Amy for not telling Jonah the truth. Who could stand to destroy his happiness? Maybe it's not the most honest thing, but the employees deserve one night of victory.

It's your turn, Superstore fans! What did you think of "Negotiations?"

Is it time for the employees to admit defeat? Or do they still have a chance to make a change?

What does the new ownership mean for Cloud 9, as a whole? Will Amy tell the employees the truth?
