Officer Kevin Olivet shoots and kills an unarmed shoplifter in the commission of a crime. The Public Advocate, who is now acting Mayor Maggie Dutton, fires Frank when he refuses to make the Officer’s record public. The press becomes so bad that Olivet decides to resign from the NYPD before the investigation is even complete.
Turns out the shoplifter was high on cocaine and amphetamines at the time of the shooting. The Mayor later apologizes to Frank and offers to keep him on because his polling numbers are so high.
When her ex-husband, Jack doesn’t return her calls, Erin goes with Danny to check it out and finds Jack has been stabbed. Jack survives, but can’t remember who tried to kill him. Erin begs Danny to work the case, even though he insists he’s retiring from the NYPD.
Turns out Jack just refused to take Dr. Webber’s case, a possible serial killer who was going head to head with Erin. Danny and Baez investigate and get a warrant for Webber’s home because he’s also a suspect in his disappearance of his girlfriend. They find the girlfriend’s body in a barrel in his basement and Webber is arrested.
Jamie and Eddie respond to a call at a club where multiple people have passed out on the dance floor. When six of the teens die from drugs laced with fentanyl, Jamie and Eddie are asked to go undercover to make contact with the dealer. They do, and the dealer is arrested.
Danny is in therapy, where it is revealed that Linda was killed months earlier in a helicopter crash where she was transporting a patient. Danny feels responsible because she was only working that shift because his work schedule had changed. He and the boys have been living at Frank’s because their house burnt down last May.
Danny thinks Linda would have wanted him to quit the NYPD but his therapist and family convince him otherwise. Linda knew how much he loved the job. Frank tells him that when his wife died, that it was his kids that got him through. The family gets together and rents a house for Danny and the boys that is near their school to help Danny begin to move on. They all have dinner together in the house and Danny says Grace.
