When Will meets a patient with Alzheimer's, he's not convinced that the Advance Directive she signed before her illness is valid anymore.The woman wants dialysis, which is against the AD, and insists her husband is lying to her about it. Charles says that's typical of this type of patient, but Will insists on convening an ethics committee anyway.
Later, the woman stops breathing and tells Will she wants to be intubated. Will does it, but her husband accuses him of violating the Advance Directive.
Meanwhile, Marcel and Natalie have a terminally ill patient who might qualify for a controversial surgery that Marcel happened to be the lead researcher on, but it could also cause his heart to fail. Natalie doesn't like the idea but the patient's wife tells her that the patient wants it even if he dies because their unborn son could have the same genetic disease.
Finally, Ben brings one of his students in, a boy about 10 years old who is in foster care and has a liver problem. Dr. Lanick learns that the boy's foster mother is not taking him to treatment as required and wants to call CPS but Ben and Maggie convince him to give them more time to locate the foster mother.
