The BAU are stumped by murders which are caused by normal people who suffer identical hallucinations involving a "shadow monster with talons for hands".

The killers each tell the team that just prior to the incidents, they smelled burning sage prior to seeing the "monster".

While investigating one of the murder scenes, Reid discovers some plastic tubing that has chemical residue of at least two different compounds that can produce hallucinations.

The team quickly discovers the common element to all three murders: the killers were all adopted in 1985, out of the same foster home.

Just as Hotch and JJ begin to use burnt sage to help one of the killers to be responsive to their questioning, the BAU lights flicker and go out, and the killer freaks out, thinking that the "monster" has come for her.

Garcia realizes that the Unsub has been hacking into the BAU in order to get information about someone in the Witness Protection Program by the name of Dr. Susannah Regan.

After discovering the Unsub's target, Hotch drives to Regan's house. Once there, the Unsub sprays a chemical into Hotch's face, and then begins to plant suggestions into him.

Who is the Unsub? Why did he target Dr. Regan and Hotch?

Is Hotch safe? Will he become a killer himself?
