Recap

Early on, we get the impression that this will not be a typical day at Seattle Grace.

Meredith's mother, Dr. Ellis Grey, is rushed to the hospital for possible diverticulitis. The elder Dr. Grey's Alzheimer's disease is now knowledge shared by everyone at the hosptial. George, assigned to her case, renders himself useless because of his supposed resemblance to Ellis' ex-husband, Thatcher (at least in her mind). A test for liver cancer in Dr. Grey is negative.

Alex treats a patient with a blushing problem -- she can't help doing it and wants to have surgery so that she can hide her emotions from others from time to time. Despite the risk of several severe side effects, she elects to go forward with it and the surgery is successful.

Cristina collapses on the floor of the operating room during a surgery of Preston's that she is assisting him with. Miranda and Izzie rush her into another O.R., where Addison treats her for an ectopic pregnancy. Cristina loses her baby as a result of the surgery but is ultimately fine, albeit heavily medicated and traumatized. Preston, who learns of her pregnancy by looking at the surgery board, makes his feelings for her clear.

Meredith cracks under the strain of the situation between her and Derek, on top of her mother's and Cristina's medical issues. She tells Derek how she misses him and how much it hurts her. Alex and Izzie's relationship keeps progressing, as she tells her fellow interns that Dr. Karev is actually really sweet once you get to know him. Sure!

Grey's Anatomy Season 2 Episode 3 Quotes

[narrating] "Surgeons are control freaks. With a scalpel in your hand, you feel unstoppable. There's no fear, there's no pain. You're 10 feet tall and bulletproof. And then you leave the O.R. All that perfection, that beautiful control, just falls to crap."

MEREDITH

[narrating] "Nobody likes to lose control, but as a surgeon there's nothing worse. It's a sign of weakness, of not being up to the task. Still there are times when it just gets away from you, when the world stops spinning, when you realize your shiny little scalpel isn't gonna save you. No matter how hard you fight it, you fall. It's scary as hell. Except there's an upside to the free fall. It's the chance you give your friends to catch you."
