Law & Order: SVU Season 20 Episode 3 involves the SVU team in current events as they deal with a refugee child who wants her mother.

The team learns about a sex trafficking operation when a little girl is brought to the hospital who has suffered severe sexual trauma. After talking to the girl, they find the man she was pimped out to and arrest him, and he gives up the pimp. When they raid his lair, they find a Hispanic girl who is 9 or 10 years old, terrified, and crying for her mother.

The team learns the girl, Gabriela, ran away from her foster home to try to find her mother, who was arrested at the border for illegal entry. Rollins wants to adopt her but Benson says no. A guy from the federal government comes to take her to a refugee camp and Gabriela freaks out, saying he was the one who took her from her mother. Benson arrests the agent for kidnapping.

Stone disapproves but agrees to take the case after meeting Gabriela. He goes to court, but a federal judge rules that federal law trumps state law and that Gabriela must go with the agent. Benson encourages her and after she goes says this isn't over.

Meanwhile, Rollins deals both with Carisi wanting to know about her pregnancy and her boyfriend's attitude towards it.
