Recap

A woman (we know will be named Offred) is driving with her family. Sirens blare. Her husband is shot and she makes for the hills with her daughter. She's caught and her daughter taken away.

She's in the window, naming items in her room. Keeping her mind fresh.

Offred is new to her post. It's her second. She's with Commander Waterford and his wife. They speak religious gibberish. She speaks out of turn, a simple "you too," when the Commander says it's nice to meet her. Mrs. Waterford notices and assured Offred if she gets trouble, she will give trouble back.

Offred goes to Rita, the "Martha" who works the kitchen to get some stamps for food. She's off to meet Ofglen to shopping. Nick works as the Commander's driver. He doesn't like tuna, but he has low status. He hasn't even been issued a woman yet.

Handmaids go everywhere in twos. They're watching each other. No friendships allowed. The conversations are stilted and would drive a sane person insane.

Offred remembers being at the beach with her family as the two women pass a group of school children.

They arrive at the grocery store. It's horrid.

"Under his eye." All the Handmaids seem to know something Offred doesn't. Praise be this and that. She could get oranges because the Commander is high up. He's on the news. The other girl swears she didn't read it!

She remembers arriving in a room after her capture. Aunt Lydia talking about the infertility plague. All so people could have their orgies. In the room, she notices an old friend, Moira. She's a lesbian, or she was.

The girls are so lucky! So privileged! They will bear children for all the barren.

That night, Moira and Offred talk about getting her daughter back. They'll get her back. Odette was rounded up in one of the dyke purges, reclassified as an unwoman, sent to the colonies.

In the shitty class, girls who were raped were at fault and God allowed it to happen to teach her a lesson.

Ceremony time. Rita and Nick show up, all dressed up for the occasion. It's Serena Joy's night. She's in charge. It's a terrible night for everyone, the ritual rape. What kind of fault is at hand here?

The way he stands, hands on his hips, while he pounds into Offred and her head pounds into the wife's crotch while she grasps onto Offred's wrists.

After the ceremony, heart pounding, sick to her stomach, Offred flees outside for air in her nightgown. Nick is on the roof above the garage, watching. She can't even get air.

In "training" they watched Janine lose her mind. Moira wants Offred to keep her shit together.

She wonders why Nick didn't call the authorities on her. Three bells ring, calling the Handmaids together.

Nick, who had previously told Offred she didn't like tuna, is in the kitchen when she tells Rita to get some because it looked good. Nick and Offred stare each other down.

Offred finds someone from the Red Center. They chat, wondering where Moira might be. Ofglen overhears. Janine does, too. Janine says Moira was sent to the colonies and must be dead by now. When the Handmaids take their places, Offred looks numb.

Ofglen worries about Offred. Aunt Lydia has brought out a man accused of rape. They need to inflict punishment. He raped a pregnant handmaid and the baby died. They go forward and form a circle around him. Thou shall not read, but thou shall kill.

Offred leads the charge, beating the bejesus out of the dude.

Janine stays out of the fray, dancing like a pregnant freak, marveling in the beauty of killing one of their oppressors.

After the scuffle, Ofglen comes clean with Offred. They both thought the other so frickin pious. They do that really well, making them distrust each other.

Ofglen admits she had a son with her wife. They had Canadian passports, she didn't.

None of them were going to get away, not if they had a red tag.

Ofglen tells her there is an eye in her house. Offred, no, June is more determined than ever to make it for her daughter, Hannah.

The Handmaid's Tale Season 1 Episode 1 Quotes

A priest, a doctor, a gay man. I think I heard that joke once. This wasn't the punchline.

Offred

A window with white curtains. The glass is shatterproof, but it isn't running away that they're afraid of. A Handmaid wouldn't get far. It's those other escapes, the ones you can open in yourself given a cutting edge or a twisted shape and a chandelier. It's harder on Ceremony Day, but thinking can hurt your chances. My name is Offred. I had another name, but it's forbidden now. So many things are forbidden now.
