This Is Us Season 5 Episode 12 revolves around changing relationships.

Beth is nervous about remembering Alex's proper pronouns before Alex comes over. When they arrive, Tess insists on going upstairs to study. Beth paces around nervously until Deja comes downstairs and complains that it isn't fair that Tess and Alex are allowed to have their door closed and she and Malik aren't. Beth hasn't thought about ground rules but decides Deja is right and heads upstairs.

Beth walks in on Alex and Tess kissing. Tess is mad and calls Beth a psycho under her breath, causing Beth to send Alex home. Tess is embarrassed and insists Beth isn't mad about being called a name. She thinks Beth didn't like her and Alex being together.

Later, Beth talks to Carol who tells her she has to adjust to what is, and please do it more quickly than she did with Beth.

Meanwhile, Kevin and Madison have hired a wedding planner. Nicky announces he wants to be part of the rehearsal dinner. However, Nicky spends the planning time making comments under his breath about Miguel having stolen Rebecca from Jack. Miguel confronts him and says he waited thirteen years and wonders every day what Jack would think.

In the past, Miguel helps Jack prepare for proposing to Rebecca but manages to get a ring stuck on his finger, while in the present Kate butts heads with her new employer.
