7. Narcos

The life and times of Pablo 'El Patron' Escobar. We begin smack dab in the drug kingpin's prime and watch everything as told from the perspective of the DEA agent tasked with infiltrating his cartel and bringing him down. There is a fair amount of English in this one mostly because of the presence of an American agent, but still, Spanish dominates all the conversations here.

8. Vis a Vis (Locked Up)

Vis a Vis (Locked Up)
Naive girlfriend commits tax fraud for her criminal lover and is sent to jail for it. She has to adapt to her new environment pretty fast or get swept away by the lingering danger and despair that being in prison entails. If you think the premise sounds a lot like Orange Is The New Black, then you can rest assured that this show goes in a totally different direction and is more than deserving of its moment in the spotlight. You can catch this internationally on Amazon Prime.

9. Deutschland '83

Deutschland '83
Espionage is the name of the game as a young, inexperienced border patrol guard gets recruited by the Stasi and sent in to infiltrate the West -- German forces at the height of the cold war. So many awesome twists and turns than you can shake a stick at and some genuinely gorgeous costumes make this sleeper hit a must -- have on your list of shows to watch. This is a German/American joint effort that premiered on SundanceTV in the U.S and Channel 4 in U.K. and is now viewable on Hulu.

10. The Rain

The Rain
This Danish gem is of the post-apocalyptic variety: Humanity as we know it has been decimated by a rain-borne virus. A couple of siblings have been hiding out in a bunker for six years; a time during which their scientist father left and never returned. Now they are out and are in search of their father and a possible cure -- two goals that may turn out to be intertwined.

11. Club De Cuervos (Club Of Crows)

Club De Cuervos (Club Of Crows)
The family patriarch is dead, and the reins of his footballing empire (soccer to some people) is to be handed over to his heir. But thanks to the gift that is sexism, his incompetent son is made club president, and now everyone has to deal with it. His older sister is pushed to the sidelines and left resenting her baby bro for robbing her of a job she was born to do. Telenovela -- level scheming follows and the ramifications of the new president's mostly stupid decisions are explored.

12. El Chapo

El Chapo
The chronicles of another drug kingpin by Netflix. But unlike his contemporary over at Narcos, El Chapo's story is one of humble beginnings. We follow him right from his days as a mere foot soldier in the Guadalajara cartel, his rise to power and eventual downfall.
