Renee Goldsberry wasn't initially meant to be a contract star. But fans fell in love with the character of Evangeline Williamson so much after she came to the show in February 2003 that she was put on contract in April of that year.
The actress was born in San Jose, CA and raised in both Houston and Detroit. She graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University with a degree in acting and went on to attend graduate school at the University of Southern California, where she received her masters in vocal jazz performance.
Goldsberry resides in Manhattan with her husband.
