The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 1 Review: I'll Remember

at .  Updated at .

I just need to kick off this The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 1 review by thanking Julie Plec and co for bringing back Matt Davis and his beautiful self.

Okay so when I lost my human nature, I also lost my game. Where are you?

Okay, now let's catch up with everyone since the few months since magic was banished from Mystic Falls...

Mystic Falls is back to busting kids for underage drinking, rather than saving its residents from vampires, hybrids and rippers. Boring, right? Good thing there's a border lurker, cough Elena cough, to keep Sheriff Forbes kind of busy.

Now, we've been over the topic of how people from TVD deal with grief differently, many many times. In our pre-premiere The Vampire Diaries season 6 Round Table we questioned who would be handling things the worst: Elena, Jeremy or Stefan?

Most bets were on Elena, because Elena's M.O. is needing to be saved. She often ends up the victim and, yeah, the audience complains about it just a little bit. The thing is, as Sheriff Forbes pointed out, Elena has lost more people than anyone else on this show.

The one thing I'm going to say that she's learned from this all is tenacity and perseverance.

I NEED to see Damon, Luke, and I'm NOT asking.

Elena is holding on as tight as she can. She is hell bent on doing anything she can to still feel Damon. She will not say goodbye to one more person in her life. She mourned Bonnie, but she refuses to mourn Damon because that means goodbye. Well... I'd say after abusing a good amount of psychotropic herbs thanks to Luke, Elena is feeling the grief.

Jeremy is grieving with the bottle, some video games and some chicks. Sounds pretty typical, right?

So... what about Stefan? He has checked out. We have seen Stefan go full ripper and balls to the wall in the past. This is a different side of him dealing. Did you see the way he shattered his iPhone after Caroline's voicemail? He has turned the other cheek.

Basically, most people are in denial. Tyler thinks his rage is under control. I'm not even sure if he acknowledges his total crush on Liv. Caroline is trying to hold it all together for everyone else. Stefan won't even acknowledge what's going on. Elena is Elena. Or is she?

By the end of the episode, she's begging Alaric to compel her to forget Damon. So will Ric do it? Ric is still adjusting to being alive since The Vampire Diaries Season 3. He's trying to be this guardian to everyone. I loved seeing him teaching again. But can he help everyone find their way back? Or at least to a better place?

Elena you know I can smell that right? I'm teaching a class full of kids who look like blood sausages. Could you put that away?

That cute cabin with pancakes and a cozy breakfast to the tune of Collective Soul's "Shine" seemed like a pretty good place to be. But, to ask the question on everyone's minds: Where the hell was that exactly? Seriously.

It's the first episode back and already we have so many questions. Now, I turn things over to you readers.

What did you think of the The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 1? Do you like the new direction things seem to be going in? Are you happy to have Ric back? Are you sick of Elena yet?

The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 1 Quotes

I wanna say thank you for giving me everything I always wanted. A love to consume me, and passion, and adventure. There's nothing more I could ever want than for it to last forever, but it can't. This is the last time I'm gonna see you. This is goodbye, Damon.

Elena [to Damon]

We're all getting through our own way.
