Is the new Lucifer scary?
Rick Springfield definitely brings a new take to the character, but he hasn’t convinced all the Supernatural Round Table panelists yet.
TV Fanatic staff writers Sean McKenna and Christine Laskodi and The Winchester Family Business’ Nightsky and Alice are ready to discuss Supernatural Season 12 Episode 2.
From Mary sticking around to the true identity of Mr. Ketch, there’s plenty to discuss when it comes to “Mamma Mia.” Let’s get started!
What was your favorite scene or quote?
Nightsky: Can there be any doubt? It has to be Sam’s conversation with his mother in her room. Jared Padalecki did a spectacular job of portraying Sam’s innocent awkwardness and tearful admission of a life-long void being filled by her presence. His emotions transitioned flawlessly, naturally flowing from the depth of their first, brief mother-son chat.
Alice: Without a doubt the scene between Sam and Mary was the most significant and brought tears to my eyes. Sam has only waited his whole life to get a hug like that from his mother! It was a very satisfying moment. But man, I loved every scene with Lucifer, too. His “I said I had plans” line was awesome! So was his frightening “Friends close, enemies closer,” delivery to Rowena.
Christine: I wish my answer was more unique, but I thought that final scene between Mary and Sam was incredible. Especially that last moment, as Mary looked at John's journal, and tears welled up... oh my gosh. It was one of the most powerful scenes of the series, in my opinion.
Sean: I’ve got to agree with you all about the Sam and Mary scene. Though to add something different, I’ll just throw out that it was pretty cool when Lucifer broke from the spell and sent Crowley running for the hills. There was a scary factor again for Lucifer and the visual of his wings as the shadow behind was fun to see.
What do you think of Toni and the British Men of Letters now?
Nightsky: I’m totally confused. Now the British Men of Letters aren’t all that bad and Toni is an out-of-control extremist? That doesn’t match her structured, hierarchical, follow orders persona.
The group’s motives also don’t make sense. Mick said they want to gain the trust of the Americans yet if necessary they’ll eliminate them all? What circumstance would drive them to mass murder people they are just meeting? He also said Toni went too far but then he sent for an enforcer who scares even her?
I can’t draw a straight line to connect any of the things that have been said so far.
Alice: I still hate her, and I’m not into them at all. Their story is not exciting me at all nor is it hooking me as a potential storyline for the rest of the season. I keep thinking of one of Dean’s old lines, “Don’t go away mad, just go away.”
Christine: I'm even more confused than I was before! So Toni is working for Mr. Ketch? Is he a Men of Letters? Is she just a henchmen, essentially? This whole story just falls flat to me. I hope it's over soon.
Sean: Yeah, I’m unimpressed and I’m just not sure about the whole British Men of Letters plan. I want to stay optimistic, but I worry these new “bad guys” might wind up being a dud. Mr. Ketch has me interested for now, but he could be the last straw for caring if he’s not an exciting new character. Guess we will see.
Did you like Rick Springfield's version of Lucifer?
Nightsky: I’m not yet convinced. I like Vince’s character very much. I liked his depth of emotion, checkered past and even his wardrobe but I can’t get over seeing Mark Pellegrino as the one and only face of Satan.
Alice: I LOVED him. Unlike Nightsky, I want him to be the new Lucifer forever. He was fantastic! The best part by far of the whole episode. I instantly connected with this Lucifer, who’s a totally evil, diabolical, chilling badass. I felt the heartbreak, too, of Vincent and applaud the way Rick Springfield was able to shift gears like that. He has done a great job so far studying this character and delivering the true evil side we all know and love. You know, the way Lucifer should be, the polar opposite of the campy mess he was last season.
Christine: I actually do! He's equal parts menacing and charming, which feels perfect for Lucifer. Even more, I love the chemistry between him and Crowley. I hope that their story is contained for a while, because I LOVE that dynamic. I don't want the Winchesters to get into it... yet.
Sean: I was skeptical of a new version of Lucifer, and still trying to figure out how he can get a vessel that’s not Sam, but I actually liked Rick Springfield’s take. There was a certain menace and scariness he brought back to the character. I’m far more interested in his story again, and though it’s tough to top Pellegrino as Lucifer, I’m curious to see where this goes.
Who is Mr. Ketch and will he be a worthy villain?
Nightsky: So far, the idea of a feared psychopath is being oversold and campy. I’m not looking forward to him entering the story at all.
Alice: Don’t care right now. If I over-speculate about him, he’ll turn out to be a bitter disappointment. This show has had mixed results with the “secret boogeyman” thing.
Christine: I need more information! That ammo piques my interest, but it's still not enough for me to decide much about him. Considering the past few villains have been let-downs, it'd be nice to have a good one. But I don't know... the British Men of Letters already give me a bad feeling.
Sean: I’m holding out hope Mr. Ketch will be an awesome villain. I’m losing interest on the British Men of Letters, so it’ll be nice to get some rejuvenation with this new character. I do wonder who it could be though.
Will Mary survive the season, and do you want her to stick around?
Nightsky: I am shocked at how easily Samantha Smith has inserted herself into the story. I feel as if she’s been there all along. I have accepted her totally and completely as being at home in the bunker, in Baby and alongside Sam and Dean. I will be devastated if they kill her again, so yes, I hope she stays in the story – but I don’t want her hunting with the boys every week. Supernatural is about broments, not family time.
Alice: Yes, I want her to stick around, and she better survive! If this show kills her, I’m officially done with it. How could you bring Mary back after all this time and then kill her again? She’s been an amazing addition to the story and fits right in. She does add a nice twist to the Sam and Dean story too, how do the boys cope with having their mother around after a lifetime without her? So far we’ve found that the boys couldn’t be in two more different places. I like it!
Christine: I've loved Mary, and I think it would be nice to see her stick around. But it would also mean a long-term dynamic shift that I just don't think Supernatural would make 12 years in. I have a feeling she won't make it to the end, and that it'll be by her choice or some sacrifice... but wouldn't that be a great way to bring Death back into the fold?
Sean: I’d like to see her stick around, and I really like the fresh dynamic she’s added to the show. I hope she’s not quickly offed, but I’m curious as to where her story is going to go. And are there unforeseen consequences from the Darkness bringing her back?
