Once Upon a Time Season 7 Episode 2 Review: A Pirate's Life

Emma Swan has left the building.

Once Upon a Time Season 7 Episode 2 served as Jennifer Morrison's last hurrah with the fantasy drama, and I'm genuinely surprised she was not killed off to explain why Hook was part of the curse going on in Hyperion Heights.

A Villain Arrives - Once Upon a Time Season 7 Episode 2

It was refreshing that Emma got her happy ending, but I can't help but feel a little short-changed by the way it all happened. It all felt a little too convenient, and that's not a good thing.

While I was ecstatic that Emma is pregnant and gets to return to Storybrooke and move on to the next chapter in her life, it just seemed too easy.

Maybe I'm forgetting this is a show about fairytales. It was concerning that Emma was not there initially. I knew she was going to make it there eventually, or it would have been a pointless episode.

Hook's idea for the message in the bottle was a typical Hook thing to do, and that's why he's one of the best characters on the show. He wanted to ensure Emma's mind was at ease because she genuinely struggled to come to terms with the fact he was moving on.

Aren't I Fabulous? - Once Upon a Time Season 7 Episode 2

Losing Jennifer Morrison was a big blow to the series, so it's great there was a way to keep Colin O'Donoghue around while allowing Hook to move on with Emma.

Wish Hook came across as a vile opportunist, but the way he miraculously changed his mind about taking Hook's place when he heard about the pregnancy was a bitter pill to swallow.

Viewers needed to have a reason to connect with Wish Hook/Rogers, so that's why the missing daughter angle was thrown into the mix, but it was too much of a 180 from the way he acted when he originally knocked Hook out.

Where Is Cinderella? - Once Upon a Time Season 7 Episode 2

It made perfect sense for Regina to stick with Henry. She's struggled to move on with her life ever since losing Robin again, so going on one final adventure was sure to help put her mind at ease about her son traveling around the expansive world.

Just please do not let Roni and Rogers start dating because I would have to stop watching. It would be fun to see Emma's reaction if it was to happen, but it would be a bit much.

The action in Hyperion Heights was not as exciting as it was on Once Upon a Time Season 7 Episode 1. Initially, I was a fan of Gabrielle Anwar as Victoria Belfrey, but all I want now is for Roni to smack her around and tell her who's the real boss.

Victoria has it out for Henry, and that's because she knows he could be the one to turn to create an uprising against her. Now that Roni, Henry, and Rogers are working together to find out what Victoria is up to, Victoria will kick her plotting into high gear to make sure she gets what she wants.

Victoria Is Not Impressed - Once Upon a Time Season 7 Episode 2

Right now, it seems like Lady Tremaine was the one to create the curse, but it's too easy to believe everything we're being told about the characters this early in the season.

This show loves to throw in a good twist to shake things up. It will not surprise me if Rumple is somehow involved. That dude does not keep his eggs in one basket.

It was a silly move for Henry to get Jacinda a job catering the ballet event. He felt bad for what he did to Jacinda and Lucy, but he only caused more problems with Victoria in the process.

Jacinda comes across as a great mother, but she must have known that working the event would cause some more problems.

Go give him one of your pirate-y heart to hearts and make him feel better.

Regina

Victoria setting the ticket prices at $550 for such a low-key event was yet another power play from her to show everyone else that she alone was the one who was calling the shots.

I do sense that things are going to be strained between her and Weaver now that the big plan to get Henry out of town was a colossal failure. Will Weaver join forces with the good guys, or will he continue on his path in the middle of the two warring factions?

That will be one of the more interesting questions to ponder. We need to find out why his colleagues never last as his partner because that will be key to uncovering what is really going on.

A New Ruler - Once Upon a Time Season 7 Episode 2

"A Pirates Life" was disappointing. Aside from the sub-par writing, it was a slow-paced hour of this ABC series. It's a real shame considering how well Once Upon a Time Season 7 started.

Will it be able to stand on its own now that Emma is definitely out of the picture? Time will tell.

Other tidbits from the episode:

  • Henry finally knows that he can write a new book, and that will be key to the plot advancing and him finding out the truth about having a kid with Cinderella.
  • Could Wish Hook's daughter be linked to another famous fairy tale?
  • Can Adelaide Kane please get upped to series regular? We've witnessed like five seconds of her in the role of Ivy, but she's AMAZING.
  • Wish Hook chatting about the woman from the book giving his life was such a beautiful moment. Hopefully, there's not a copy of Emma sticking around.
