The Originals Season 5 Episode 4 Review: Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

So ... did Nazi vampires kidnap Hayley?

Most of The Originals Season 5 Episode 4 focused on Klaus establishing himself as the most feared and hated man in New Orleans -- again.

He wasn't really in the mood to play nice, and who could blame him? His brother had just washed his hands of him, and the mother of his child was being tortured.

Old Friend - The Originals Season 5 Episode 4

Did anyone expect him to handle something this serious in a civil manner? Or to give anyone the benefit of the doubt? People can change, but they don't change that much!

He made enemies out of all three factions -- the vampires, the werewolves and the witches and it may have been all for naught because this whole time, it was an enemy from the 1930s?

During his quest to find his baby mama, Klaus and Marcel realized that whoever took her had it out for her because she was a crossbreed.

The most bizarre clue came in a box with Hayley's mutilated body part (gross!). Klaus' frustration at the realization that they no longer had an ally in Vincent caused him to throw the box at a cobblestone wall which revealed the medallion complete with a swastika.

The witches are done being on call for you. All you know how to do is use and abuse. You treat us like we're pawns. Like we're pawns in your family's endless self-defeating schemes. No more. But congrats. You made it back to the top of the food chain.

Vince

According to Klaus, It was a message from "enemies I thought I buried long ago."

Admittedly, this was not the direction I envisioned for the final season.

Nazis? In New Orleans? During Mardi Gras? I suppose weirder things have happened.

Oh, Josh - The Originals Season 5 Episode 4

It never even occurred to me that Nazi vampires would have existed, but it would make sense why they would be lashing out at someone that was a "mix." Some things never change.

And in a teaser for The Originals Season 5 Episode 5, we're shown flashbacks to when Klaus was dealing with a cult of werewolf hating vampires whom he slaughtered by the dozens. Hmm ... did some of them survive?

The bigger question is why now? Why Hayley? If they are disgusted with hybrids, then Klaus, Marcel, and even Hope could have been targeted.

Did Klaus reignite some flames when he went on his deranged killing spree all over Europe?

Klaus's game plan was to put pressure on all three factions to see which one would crack. And it worked!

The witches offered assistance, the werewolves wanted to find Hayley as much as anyone since she was there Alpha, but the vampires continuously resisted.

When Klaus brought that up, Marcel was finally convinced -- it had to be a vampire.

Old Friends - The Originals Season 5 Episode 4

And this was a crucial point because I believe the vampire Nazi was hiding in plain sight.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's the one woman that was a constant pain in the ass. I apologize for not knowing her name, but I assumed she was going to get killed by the end of the episode so I didn't write it down.

Not only was she vocal about her distaste for Klaus, but she also resented Marcel for thinking he was suddenly the "King" again.

She also hated Henry, a freshly minted hybrid, for killing her vampire friend, which would give her motive for hanging him.

And on a few occasions, she even mentioned that Marcel and Hayley weren't "one of us" alluding to noticeable difference -- they are all-powerful hybrids.

Most people grunted when they had to fall in line with Marcel's new style of leadership, with Klaus by his side, but she was distraught.

They Mutilated Hayley - The Originals Season 5 Episode 4

If she/they were bold enough to mutilate Hayley, who knows how far they'll go or how they'll react when Klaus finally does get to them!

Marcel and Klaus have always been brothers, but even though they've been fighting for the same thing, they very rarely see eye-to-eye.

Finally seeing them partner up to rule the city and their faction together was such a treat. I've waited for this moment since Klaus adopted Marcel into the family.

Look, I don't know what happened between you and Elijah. And if he were here, he would know exactly what to say, but he's not, I am and I'm saying you misplayed this.

Marcel

And it's only possible because Elijah is out of the picture. Elijah's absence has taken quite a toll on Klaus, as expected, but I think he'll come out a little less dependent and more able to make more rational decisions. At least, I hope that's the case.

Marcel and Klaus were always meant to rule together. Nothing can stop them!

Personally, I saw nothing wrong with his aggressive approach -- desperate times call for desperate measures and whoever took Hayley is enjoying this little game they're playing.

Somethin Isn't Right - The Originals Season 5 Episode 4

It's entirely possible that her boyfriend, Declan, is somehow responsible considering we haven't seen him since her disappearance.

At first, I wasn't too concerned that she went missing cause I figured that they'd find and bring her home quickly enough. But now, I'm not so sure about that. Hayley could be gone for good, and that's terrifying.

Hope: All the witches in New Orleans think that I'm gonna melt the city if she doesn't come home.
Roman: You can do that?
Hope: Probably. I don't know.

It's also quite hilarious that everyone loves Hayley and considers her a friend, but no one can find common ground with Klaus.

It doesn't bode well for Hope's anger issues.

Freya heeded Vincent's warnings that Hope might be the demise of the Mikaelson clan, New Orleans, the world, etc. and offered to help her control the prophecy of the witches.

It's comforting to know that she has a motherly figure in Freya.

Checking in on Hope - The Originals

Maybe when Klaus finally finds Hayley's kidnappers, Hope can channel all her anger to light them on fire instead?

We're so close to the Salvatore Boarding School yet no Caroline sighting, and no interaction with the Saltzman twins aside from the possibly reveal that they like to drink as much as Alaric. Boo.

Lastly, I'm a bit disappointed that much of the episode focused on Klaus pitting the factions against each other and didn't even touch upon all the major Elijah revelations from The Originals Season 5 Episode 3!

They didn't even acknowledge that he set himself on fire to be born anew!

Since Klaus finally confessed to what happened when he visited his brother in France, will Marcel visit Elijah and force his memories back upon him as his last effort to save Hayley?

If anyone cares about her more than Klaus and Marcel, it's Elijah. At least, we're still betting on that.
