Project Blue Book Season 1 Episode 2 Review: The Flatwoods Monster

at .

Strange things are happening all around Dr. Hynek.

While he thought he solved the Flatwoods Monster case on Project Blue Book Season 1 Episode 2, he left the small West Virginia town with more questions than answers.

Hynek is still thinking like a scientist, but with all the weird getting thrown at him, he's beginning to take a different perspective about what's happening in the world of spaceships and aliens.

Investigating Flying Saucers

If Sarah and her family were the only ones to have witnessed the monster that emerged from the crashed spaceship, Hynek wouldn't have questioned the "truth" of his explanations.

Evelyn also being a witness to the monster (it even spoke to her!) made the situation all the more mysterious. And the fact that she knew about the Man in the Black Hat (or "men in hats" as she said) sent his inquiring mind into overdrive.

A woman in a mental institution claiming she saw a monster is one thing, but claiming she's been talking to the same guy Hynek has seen every time he's on a case is something completely different.

Hynek doesn't quite understand what the picture means (could it be a photo of an alien ship?) that the Man in the Black Hat left for him, but he knows it's a breadcrumb on the trail to the truth. And he also knows deep down that Evelyn's death wasn't an accident.

I can't quite figure out why the Man in the Black Hat would push her out the window -- if that's what happened. I can't imagine she jumped of her own volition.

It might be that it's not the Man in the Black Hat as we know him at all but some other government operative working to quiet the witnesses. But if they killed Evelyn, why not Sarah and her family?

And if it really was the Man in the Black Hat who did the deed, why did he do it?

Hynek Questions - Project Blue Book Season 1 Episode 2

Many things baffle me about the Man in the Black Hat. How does he know precisely where Hynek is going so that he can make sure he's seen?

What if Hynek decided not to question Evelyn? Why does he keep sending cryptic messages?

I also wonder why Hynek hasn't said anything to Quinn about the Man in the Black Hat considering he only shows up when Hynek is with Quinn.

I know it's all part of the fun, so I'm just going to enjoy the story and not try to get too deep into the logic of it all because so far the story is a blast!

How long Hynek will believe his theory about the meteor and owl being the spaceship and monster is anyone's guess. It might have been the truth, but the government is hiding something, and they're using Hynek to divert the truth of what's happening.

I'm not sure that the spaceship in the hangar was from the Flatwoods site because it was in too good a shape to have gotten recovered from a crash, but the Air Force is recovering spaceships and aliens from somewhere.

A Friend of the Men in Hats - Project Blue Book Season 1 Episode 2

Harding is a man on the edge. He has no patience for questions and only wants Hynek to do his job.

Anything more and Hynek will become a liability. I don't doubt that Harding and Valentine would have no issues making Hynek disappear if he poses too much of a problem.

Hynek has to be wondering why Quinn is so open and shut about every case they've been on, but Quinn only wants to move things along because the quicker he solves these cases, the faster he'll get his new post.

Quinn isn't even teetering on the edge of maybe believing something is out there. The only alien he thinks exists might be Hynek himself. Did you see his face when Hynek told him about reading the entire Encyclopedia Britannica? Twice?

But I get the feeling that as he and Hynek continue to work cases, it's not all going to be so black and white for him. He's going to start noticing there are bigger things at play.  We'll have to wait to discover whether or not he'll risk his career to dig a little deeper.

Susie is working with a partner now to get closer to Hynek. Her friend tapped Hynek's office while she took Mimi out for a night on the town.

It's hard to fathom why she is so interested in what Hynek is doing. My theory about her being a reporter is still the best guess.

I also think she has a bit of a crush on Mimi. Why else would she have taken so many pictures of her when Mimi's not her quarry?

How soon before Mimi starts divulging about what her husband is doing on his secret work trips?

Over to you!

What did you think of "The Flatwoods Monster"? Are you enjoying the ride so far?

Are you enjoying the mystery of the Man in the Black Hat? What do you think the picture means?

Will Hynek figure out what's going on? Will Quinn?

Project Blue Book Season 1 Episode 2 Quotes

Quinn: I thought you just studied the sky.
Hynek: When I was seven, I contracted a severe case of Scarlet Fever. I didn't leave my bed for almost a year. I read the entire Encylopedia Brittanica. Twice.

Next time, Doc, let me do the talking.
