Knightfall Season 2 Episode 2 Review: The Devil Inside

at .  Updated at .

The producers of Knightfall weren't kidding when they said the show was going to be "grittier and darker" this season.

On Knightfall Season 2 Episode 2 we started and ended with two brutal scenes of violence, one of which gave us insight into the reasons for DeNogaret's evil ways.

I'd turn my back on the Church, too.

DeNogaret - Knightfall Season 2 Episode 2

Death by fire is probably the worst and most cruel way to leave this earth.

Even more horrific would be to experience it they way DeNogaret did.

He actually wasn't the one who suffered that horrible death, but he was forced to watch his parents endure it which is just as bad and perhaps even worse.

It almost makes you feel sorry for him (I said almost.)

DeNogaret is a crafty bastard, and it's clear he's been maneuvering and plotting his revenge for years.

The Pope's arrogant words to Philip and the Court about submission to the Church was the perfect opportunity to put his plan into action.

It was a shock to learn that DeNogaret was the boy and the Pope was the young priest from that early scene.

Boniface - Knightfall Season 2 Episode 2

His graphic description of what he saw, how he felt, and how his views of the Church and the world changed was powerful.

Even Gawain was disgusted by the story enough to leave DeNogaret to deal with Boniface the way he saw fit.

I was just a child. I went to church. I prayed to the Lord. I believed in everything the Bible and men like you taught me. But then you took it all away. I tried to keep the faith, I tried to keep believing that somehow, some way I would come to understand how a just and merciful God would allow men such like you to inflict such unjust suffering in his name. But when you're ripped from your mother's arms and made to watch her flesh sizzle and burn like a pig on a spit, all that's left to believe is the vagary and brutality of life itself. No God. No devil. No heaven. No hell -- other than the one the wretched like you created. After you killed them, I was alone in the world. Living in the gutter. Baiting vermin with crumbs of bread. And my uncle found me and taught me the law for one purpose only -- so that I could free as much of this world as possible from false prophets such as you!

DeNogaret

But even facing certain death, the Pope still spewed his vile words defending what he did as an act of salvation.

He sincerely believed that he had the power, given to him by God, to make those decisions. What a despicable piece of garbage.

He deserved what he got.

Now, without anyone to stand in the way, Philip has free reign to go after the Templars and bring the Order down.

He also has a double mission in mind.

Philip is taking full advantage of Louis' anger about his mother's death to Landry and Joan's baby which they believe is still a boy.

Philip - Knightfall Season 2 Episode 2

It's not clear if Louis is planning to kill all babies that fit the bill or only baby boys, but he won't be showing any mercy whatever he decides to do.

It's going to get ugly.

Eve is safely hidden for now, but once word gets out about what's happening, Tancrede might have to take action which will put him in great danger.

Landry might even get involved if he hears about it, but he's dealing with too many emotions and too much guilt to be of any use.

If goes rogue, he'll be done with the Templars because Talus won't tolerate any more acts of heroism from the fallen knight.

Talus is coming around to actually appreciating Landry.

He liked how Landry gathered his men into a team to complete the wall challenge, but Talus also knows Landry has a long way to go before he can be fully redeemed of his previous sins.

Think Landry - Knightfall Season 2 Episode 2

It's true that Quentin's death was Landry's fault.

If he hadn't decided to investigate the screaming woman, his group wouldn't have been attacked by the Luciferians.

I have a different challenge for you worthless pig humpers!

Talus

But Landry wants to be everyone's savior instead of focusing and sticking to the business at hand.

Even though he doesn't know it yet, he's also responsible for Draper and the other Templars deaths as well for the same reason as stated above.

Draper on a Mission - Knightfall Season 2 Episode 2

Landry needs to spend some time in isolation and think about what he's doing and why.

Then he needs to reconsider if living a Templar life is the way to go. He's more danger to all of them now than ever before.

Of course, it's already too late for the Templar order because their inevitable end will also be because of Landry.

His affair with Joan is what set everything off, and it hasn't and won't get any better. They're doomed.

We all know it's a historical fact the Templar Order is destroyed by King Philip, but I have to mention the story being told in this version is magnificent.

I'm vaguely familiar with the actual history of how it all went down and why, but this story is a lot more interesting than Philip just ending the Order because of money.

One more thing: Talus was awesome tonight! He really is a crass master! Loved every moment!

Over to you!

Do you agree that everything happening to the Templars, present and future, is Landry's fault?

Should Landry leave the Templars?

Will Eve be spared?

Do you feel sorry for DeNogaret and what he went through as a child?

Knightfall Season 2 Episode 2 Quotes

At least you knew your father. Mine simply provided the seed and wandered off.

Quentin: I think this is the worst stew I've ever had.
Landry: We eat for sustenance, not pleasure, Quentin.
