The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 21 Review: I'll Wed You in the Golden Summertime

It's really, really hard not to jump straight to a discussion of the very end of The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 21 and begin pontificating on what it all means and how Nina Dobrev's exit from The Vampire Diaries will be orchestrated during next week's season finale. Like, SUPER HARD, you guys.
BUT! There's much, much more which needs to be discussed before we can get to THAT moment. So let's get to it.
First of all, does Caroline Forbes know how to throw a wedding or what? Every time she takes charge of an event I find myself wishing it were my whatever-it-is she's putting together. Jo and Alaric's wedding was no exception.
How GORGEOUS was that? The flowers. The lights. The tulle. It was so perfect!
Until Kai showed up, stabbed the bride in the stomach repeatedly, and then blew the windows out of the barn after giving everyone in there a migraine. (And maybe probably also killing Elena. EEP!)
From Bonnie's opening dream sequence where she envisioned Lily telling her about a loophole two things became clear:
- Lily Salvatore would not be in the dungeon for long.
- Kai would be returning.
With magic comes loopholes and with loopholes come retcon. It's the convenient and frustrating thing about magic in the movies and television. There's always another way.
Kai apparently used astral projection to get out of his prison world and into the present day in order to stab Bonnie or otherwise injure her so that he and his Heretic brethren could return to Mystic Falls to wreak havoc on his entire family and anyone who has ever dreamed of crossing him. And Jo's unborn babies.
I'm not saying I hate that he figured out a different way to get back, but I am saying I hate that he tried to commit infanticide and maybe also killed his sister in the process when she posed no great threat to him given the fact that she absolutely would not want her children to merge AND she gave up her magic so Kai wouldn't die and kill the entire coven.
Why does Chris Woods have to be so hot? His hotness makes it nearly impossible to completely hate Kai, and he definitely deserves to be hated. But I can't hate him all the way. There's still 1% (or 10%) likability there and it's crazy and weird.
It's not crazy and weird that Caroline is pushing Stefan away following her loss of control and subsequent spiral but it was nice to hear Stefan tell her that's what falling in love is all about. She's just not ready for that. Total bummer for the Steroline fans. The events of The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 22 might shove them together as their grief is compounded but then again promos are often misleading.
From the minute it was announced that Nina Dobrev is leaving The Vampire Diaries, I suspected she would go by way of death. Julie Plec's most recent interview, in which she says fans won't believe what they're doing with the character, Elena Gilbert, coupled with the closing scene from tonight's episode, almost confirms my suspicions.
I'm willing to hold out just a little bit that she's not going to die. Maybe she'll be in a coma. Maybe she'll get shipped off somewhere else. But my hopes aren't high.
Actually, I'm kind of hoping they do kill the character, not because I don't like her or find her somewhat pertinent to the show, but because death has to mean something. People can't die and come back to life all the time, even on a supernatural show and especially not on this one where the stories and characters are just grounded enough in reality so that everything feels purposeful. Okay, most things.
Dobrev has made it very clear that she's only giving the series six seasons which sounds like she's totally out for any future guest appearances (unless someone needs a doppelganger and then who else are they going to call?). Death is pretty much the only exit for the character, which means, naturally, that Damon is about to spiral.
He was completely ready to walk away from being a vampire after having what might have been one of the sweetest revelations in the entire series. Watching the old couple, still in love after 40 years together, assured him that one lifetime with Elena was better than a hundred lifetimes without her. He was willing to walk away from it all for her.
We know Damon doesn't deal well with change like this, particularly not when it comes to losing someone he loves. The devastation he'll face if she dies will be intense, and what's great about Damon, the character, is that he won't even have to turn off his humanity not to care. He just...won't care. At all.
That will set up The Vampire Diaries Season 7 to be all about how Stefan will help bring his brother back from the brink of disaster and then we'll all live (sort of) happily ever after. Maybe.
We'll see.
