Bones Round Table: Did Ms. Mills Deserve a Second Chance?

at .

Brennan fired her new intern after only one day... Hodgins considered experimental surgery for his paralysis... and Aubrey hid his college singing career from Booth on Bones Season 11 Episode 16

Below, TV Fanatics Ashley Sumerel and Christine Orlando are joined by Pam from CBR Radio to debate if Ms. Mills deserved a second chance, if the a cappella storyline sang to them and should Hodgins take a risk on surgery after “The Strike in the Chord.”

Did Ms. Mills deserve a second chance or was Brennan right to fire her?

Pam: Yes, She deserved some time to get used to her job and to Dr. Brennan and one day was not enough time to give anyone. That's Bones for you though tough as nails.

Ashley: I think Brennan was too hard on her, but I still think she as right to fire her. It just seemed like she was way too unprepared for the job.

Christine: It seemed silly that someone who had been around Brennan before would be so unprepared for the job. It’s not like she made one or two mistakes; she got everything wrong so I do think she deserved to be fired.

Were you a fan of the a cappella storyline?

Pam: No, it did nothing to peak my interest. Aubrey didn't sing not really lip sync maybe, they should have used Emily at least she can sing. Would have been much more interesting for me.

Ashley: I thought it was fun, and I loved that Aubrey had a history with a cappella! That video of him at the end was fantastic.

Christine: I think Castle Season 8 Episode 9, did the a cappella storyline better simply because they used Jon Huertas (Esposito) who can really sing. I’m with Pam on this one; it would have been better if they had a character who could have really joined in.

College Experience - Bones

Do you expect Hodgins to eventually go ahead with the surgery? Do you hope to see him walk again?

Pam: No, I knew Angela would be the voice of reason and talk him down from being so desperate to be who he was before the accident. He shouldn't have made such a huge decision without her knowing. They are in the marriage together and he needs to quit shutting her out in his fear of accepting his new situation.

Ashley: Honestly, I hope not. This isn't Grey's Anatomy or something like that, and I think it's so interesting to watch him deal with this. If he gets some miracle surgery, I think it's going to feel too false.

Christine: It wouldn’t surprise me if he eventually goes ahead with the surgery. I think the desire to get the use of his legs back will be too much to not take the chance.

Should Parker have asked Brennan to convince Booth to let him out of their planned summer vacation?

Pam: Yes and no, he knows Brennan has a way with Booth that nobody else has and he wanted her to soften up his father. But after she talked with him he should have called his Dad and made new arrangements to plan another trip after the class was completed.

Ashley: Probably not, though I think it was nice that he trusted Brennan enough to ask. And I like that we got to see what their relationship was like separately.

Christine: I’m torn on this one. I like that he felt comfortable enough to confide in Brennan but I also agree with Pam that Parker should have worked on coming up with a compromise to spend time with his dad before or after Oxford.

Was there anything in “The Strike in the Chord” that disappointed you?

Pam: I sound like a broken record but yes again we have Bones and Booth pretty much separated for the entire episode less and less time together working cases. Again no romance between these two and it's becoming a pattern. As a viewer I’m not happy to see this play out in  each episode.

Ashley: I think I would have liked to see a little more of Parker, or to have some more backstory on Mills. But generally I thought it was a fun episode.

Christine: I found the Mills story to be silly. I can’t imagine someone that unprepared could make it through the screenings and interviews to become one of Brennan’s interns. It just turned out to be this sad, side note of a story with no real purpose.

What was your favorite quote or scene from the episode?

Pam: I didn't have one for this episode it was an okay episode for me .

Ashley: This Bones quote from Booth, referring to Parker:

Let me tell you something Bones, if he ends up turning out like you I will be the proudest dad ever.

Booth

Christine: There weren’t a lot of highlights in this installment. I enjoyed seeing Hodgins play with the rats because they were kind of cute. Other than that, I’ll go with the quote Ashley noted above but overall it was kind of a mediocre episode for me.
