Vikings Season 5 Episode 6 Review: The Message

at .

The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Right?

That appears to be the case now that Ivar and King Harald have officially teamed up to take down Lagertha on Vikings Season 5 Episode 6

Of course, we all know their alliance will be short-lived, and as soon as Lagertha is defeated they'll just turn on each other.

Floki and Lagertha - Vikings Season 5 Episode 6

Hvitserk almost blew the entire thing by blurting out that Ivar wants to be made the king of Kattegat.

King Harald has his own plans for Kattegat, and Ivar had to quickly assure him that he won't stand in the way of them, at least, not for long.

Ivar: In the long term, what is to stop you from ruling Kattegat when I am dead and gone? How long can that be? I'm not a very healthy person. I'm a cripple.
Harald: But your brother, Hvitserk?
Ivar: All that matters to the both of us is to reclaim the kingdom that was torn from us from that murderous bitch, Lagertha.

Ivar obviously does not plan to die anytime soon, crippled or not, so if his side does win this war and he becomes king, it'll be interesting to see just how patient Harald is willing to be with him. Chances are, it wouldn't be long before the two allies are at war with each other.

Were you guys expecting Heahmund to join him?

It was way too early for him to die, so that was his only real choice, but that doesn't mean he's not plotting his own betrayal.

He's just as smart and manipulative as Ivar. He knows he has to stay alive as long as possible in order to bide his time and eventually win his freedom. It would not shock me at all if he has something up his sleeve. Ivar may want to consider sleeping with one eye open for as long as Heahmund is part of his army.

Ivar - Vikings Season 5 Episode 6

At least, in the meantime, Heahmund gets to kill more Heathens, so I suppose that's a win for him, even if he's technically doing it for Ivar.

Heahmund: Why do you offer me this choice?
Ivar: Because I am jealous of you. I would like to be like you, strong and whole, a great warrior. That is why I saved you, and that is why I want you to fight alongside me.

It's hard to see Ivar admitting something like that, as he is not the type to bare his soul to anyone, let alone his enemy, but we also know how manipulative he is. He knows exactly what to say in order to get what he wants, and that's all this really is, though there probably is actually some truth to it.

Ivar sees the similarities to himself in Heahmund with the main difference being that he has fully functioning legs. Ivar may not be able to bring himself to kill Heahmund right now, but he must also see him as a threat.

Having him join the army is a strategic move. He has that whole "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer" mindset.

It's going to be a ruthless battle, and who knows which side will come out on top?

Astrid and Harald - Vikings Season 5 Episode 6

As expected, Astrid betrayed King Harald in order to get a message to Lagertha.

Honestly, without that head's up, I'm not sure Lagertha would have stood a chance, but at least now she knows Ivar and Harald have teamed up, and she knows when they are planning to attack.

Of course, this is assuming the plan doesn't change. I get the feeling Ivar suspects Astrid may betray her new husband, so it would not be surprising if he has a private conversation with Harald later and moves up the timetable.

I hope for Lagertha and Astrid's sake, that's not the case.

Astrid paid a HUGE price to get that message to Lagertha. It's actually a little surprising that bastard actually delivered the message, but I guess he got what he wanted, as did his entire crew.

If he comes home, Astrid needs to find a way to have him killed.

Torvi - Vikings Season 5 Episode 6

What do you guys think of Lagertha's decision to spare Floki and the rest of his group after they betrayed her?

Do you think a decision like that will ultimately be her downfall?

I don't want to say Lagertha is not as ruthless as Ivar because she's definitely capable of it, but at the same time, she has a human side that he doesn't really seem to possess.

On superhero shows, having that vulnerability always ends up being a strength, not a weakness, so it will be interesting to see if it helps Lagertha's side win in the end.

Right now it's hard to see her winning knowing Ivar will stoop as low as it takes. He's already killed one brother and has no qualms about killing another. Ubbe, on the other hand, might be more hesitant.

Hesitation from anyone on their side when the opportunity arises could be their downfall. What will Ubbe do if he is faced with the opportunity to kill Ivar or Hvitserk?

We barely saw Bjorn, but he survived the attack in Africa and appears to be heading home, and he couldn't have picked a more opportune time to return.

He could be the X-factor in swinging the battle, especially now that Floki has disappeared with a good chunk of Lagertha's soldiers. She needs more troops, and Bjorn is about to deliver.

So, which side will come out on top? Will Lagertha live to see another season, or will Ivar claim the throne of Kattegat?

While we're waiting to find out, catch up and watch Vikings online

Vikings Season 5 Episode 6 Quotes

Harald: What is it you really want, Ivar Lothbrok?
Ivar: Revenge. I dream of the many ways I can make Lagertha suffer before I kill her. I want revenge because she killed my beautiful mother.
Harald: What of the kingdom? What of Kattegat?
Ivar: That is not so important to me.
Harald: But sure you would rather win-
Ivar: I said that is not so important to me. What is it about the word "king" that makes even reasonable people behave like idiots?

Ivar: In the long term, what is to stop you from ruling Kattegat when I am dead and gone? How long can that be? I'm not a very healthy person. I'm a cripple.
Harald: But your brother, Hvitserk?
Ivar: All that matters to the both of us is to reclaim the kingdom that was torn from us from that murderous bitch, Lagertha.
