Vanessa bonds with Jen, a foreign exchange student, at a fundraiser. When the two discover they both love Geology, Vaness decides the young girl should stay with the Baxters.

Despite not being thrilled with the idea, Mike agrees to meet Jen and her father, Henry.  Ed, Joe, and Chuck give Mike grief about doing whatever Vanessa wants.

At the dinner, Mike downplays his political beliefs in front of Henry to please Vanessa. However, it backfires when Henry finds Mike's lack of opinions weak and says Jen cannot stay with them.

Mike later takes Henry to Outdoor Man to have the guys prove Mike is full of beliefs and opinions. He finds out the real reason Henry said no is that he does not want his teenage daughter to leave home. 

Henry agrees to let Jen live with Mike and Vanessa next semester. Vaness and Jen express their excitement with Geology puns that only the two of them find funny.

Kristin and Ryan are upset Boyd told Mandy and Kyle about his crush but not them. Boyd explains it is because his parents act too weird when he talks to them.

Boyd makes Kristin and Ryan promise to be cool when Danielle comes over to do homework. They hide their excitement from him and remain calm. 

When the girl arrives, Boyd freaks out, and his parents talk him down. Ryan and Kristin are happy he still needs them but did admit to recording his meltdown.
